When to wait for a GOTY edition?

I think almost all of the popular games (+1 million sales) get some kind of repackaging with all the DLC, especially when they have day one DLC. I recently bought Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition and I'll be getting the Batman Arkham City GOTY Edition (even though the box art looks like a magazine cover). I already did this for Fallout 3, Dragon Age Origins, Borderlands and Uncharted 2 but it was never on purpose. I didn't wait for them to get these editions, somehow I just missed them because I didn't had a ps3 when they came out or I wasn't aware of them because I didn't played the previous games.

But now things are different, I waited for Fallout New Vegas because they add up almost the cost of another game through DLC, same thing with Batman and other games from publishers that apparently don't know how to do things right. I believe if you are adding up 20$-40$ in content, it better be something big, like the expansion packs used to be.

So what games you think are better off waiting instead of buying day one? For example, I was planning on getting Mass Effect 3 but day one DLC and the announcement of new endings DLC made me think I was better off playing through the backlog I already have and waiting for the complete package instead.

The good thing about GOTYE's is that while DLC prices hardly ever get cheaper, because a GOTYE is sold in retail it will get cheaper. Meaning you could get the game + all the DLC for just £15 at some point, which is what i've been planning to do with Arkham City

The only GotY game I bought was Oblivion, purely because it came with Shivering Isles. Other than that, I tend to avoid GotY games because I don't mind paying for dlc for a game I really enjoy (Fallout 3 is a perfect example of that).

What I do is buy the regular version, play it and if it is worthy of buying the DLCs I would sell it and then buy the GOTY version, which always works out cheaper than buying DLCs individually.
