There is a punk on Red Dead Redemption named NYC-TERROR-WALI that has been using an exploit of some kind to crash PS3 consoles in gang matches. Several people had to restart their systems after getting shot by NYC-TERROR-WALI. One person believed it was dynamite that hit him but wasn't sure because the console froze immediately. I've heard of people doing stuff like this but never experienced it first hand. I don't know if the hacks he is using can cause physical damage to the PS3 but it can't be good for it.
