Dude, the gap between 480p and 720p is actually huge (just a bit larger than the gap between 1080p and 720p, actually).
Everyone loves HD these days, especially when you're playing on a 1080p TV and it has to stretch the image that much. That said, 576p isn't too bad.

Above 40 inches there is a pretty big jump in quality from 720p to 1080p simply due to pixel density. As you get to lower sizes (below 40"), the difference is less pronounced because the pixel density for a 37" tv @ 720p is quite close to that of a 46" tv @ 1080p.
That is what truly matters, by the way (pixel density). The best quality screen I've seen (a Sony oLED) has something like 960x540 resolution, but because it's only 11" diagonal it has the same pixel density as a 40" 1080p tv and as such can play high resolution movies.

Yeah, I've been considering buying the 11" oLED screen for my mom's birthday, but part of me wants to hold out for a huge price decrease (or for larger screen sizes) in the future.

Your shitty tube tv is 480i...which just means it's done differently.
The difference between 480p and 720p is massive. I find it hard to believe you're actually watching things in 720p and 480p as you say you are, because there really is a big gap. I mean really, do I NEED to show you the difference using actual screenshots from shows?

FB, screenshots are a pretty good way to show the difference, especially when you consider that screenshots actually show less of a difference than recorded video does (therefore, a big difference in a screenshot is an even BIGGER difference for a video).
Finally, watching a game at 720p on a 50" tv isn't going to look very impressive compared to a game at 480p on a 20" tv because of (gasp) the pixel density. Try watching shit at 480p on a 50" 1080p tv and come back.Red Edit: Even if it is FB, you still can't go around the boards calling people idiots.Mod Edit: Feb 21, 10 by Red 9

It will only really be an issue with loading screens, and as you already pointed out there will be pretty big jumps in read speed for the PS4's Blu-Ray drive. As it is, the PS3 has the slowest read speed of any Blu-Ray drives out there (at least compared to newer ones) if I recall. Furthermore, Daweii seems to be under the impression that we will be going to fully digital media for game distribution, which I just don't see happening.

RAM would help prevent in-game lag, while the read speed is a bit bigger for loading screens and stuff (simply put, no games we're playing actually use up the max data transfer rate while playing, and I don't expect any will reach it next generation either).

If I recall, Halo 3 was rendered at something weird like 640p (maybe 600p). Anyways yeah, they just upscale using the GPU. A lot of games do that. =/
Btw Chiro, 576p is actually a PAL resolution (at the very least, that's what Adobe Premier Pro is telling me). That said, they choose to upscale games instead these days.

576p and 720p are relatively close resolutions, but your tv will upscale/downscale to whatever it supports or (in the case of a game at 720p on a 1080p tv) it will adjust its own resolution to match that of the game.
