	Log in to remove this advertisement OMG this is infuriating!! im trying to get the PS3 to recognize my external HDD so that i can back it up on it but its not working. i formatted and repartitioned the HDD, giving it a 32 GB FAT32 partition so the PS3 could see it. but when i connected it and clicked on backup on the PS3, it keeps saying "connect the storage media at save destination" error message. i thought the PS3 was able to recognize FAT32, so why isnt the partition on my HDD being recognized?

	Try formatting it to NTFS. The PS3 doesn't recognise FAT32, that's your problem. EDIT: I'm no expert on this, but my brother has a 1TB external HDD and he formatted it in NTFS, and it works perfectly with his PS3. ------------------- I know that you would like me, if only you could see me, if only you could meet me.

	^^Are you sure that's correct? Because everything I've read says that the PS3 will only read FAT32-formatted drives, and not NTFS.

	Has your External HDD got any kind of transfer program installed on it? I never tried using my HDD with my PS3 before I deleted all the files that were on it to get rid of the transfer helper program installed on it as default. 	Has your External HDD got any kind of transfer program installed on it? I never tried using my HDD with my PS3 before I deleted all the files that were on it to get rid of the transfer helper program installed on it as default. 	Try using the entire drive instead of partitioning one. I have used external drives with my PS3 formatted to FAT32, but I have never tried a partitioned one. -------------------

	Did you make the first block the FAT32? I think if the PS3 recognizes partitions at all, it would recognize the one on the first block... That is IF it recognizes partitions at all... ------------------- α Ω Blood Dragon ~\| Rift \|~ Starbound

	It's a format-specific thing, in that only certain OSs will work with certain drive format types. In any case, you wouldn't happen to be using a Seagate hard drive, would you? My 1.5TB Seagate won't be recognized on the PS3 because it needs the device software to work and the PS3 OS can't install it. That said, I didn't actually pay attention to the format type but it doesn't matter because that hard drive died anyways. ------------------- Gogogogo

He's telling it like it is. The removable storage device must use the FAT32 file system in order for the PS3 to recognize it. Search the info for yourself. Double check your brothers storage device for us... if it truly is formatted NTFS that would be interesting to hear. FYI - If you have an external hard drive that's formatted in NTFS, you can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive to FAT32. -------------------

My 1.5TB Seagate won't be recognized on the PS3 because it needs the device software to work and the PS3 OS can't install it. no its a WD My Book 500 GB. anyway, if the PS3 cant recognize partitions, then the whole HDD is gonna have to be FAT32, but i thought 32 GB was the max the HDD can be in FAT32 format? does anyone know if the PS3 has been updated to support the exFAT format? thats what id really like to put my HDD in.

	You can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive, but you'll need to create partitions on large external hard drives because Windows can do only FAT32 on drives 32GB or smaller. Compuapps Swissknife will allow you to format larger than a 32GB partition. Again, I am not sure if the PS3 recognizes partitions but I would think it would. -------------------

	ok so i just tried making only 1 32 GB FAT32 partition and leaving the rest unpartitioned, still didnt work. i tried using Swissknife but it doesnt seem like it does jack. ill try it again though. EDIT: ok just made the entire HDD a FAT32 using Swissknife and it STILL wont work! what the hell??
