how do u say SD won't die but u'll need an adapter? with how it is now, either the cable goes into ur tv or goes into a receiver to ur tv. if u have to buy an adapter to have it be digital, apparently SD died. i'm not sayin the sdtv's will be extinct, i'm just sayin the radio waves n all that will die.

just like u said, sdtv's will be around still. just u'll probably need an adapter (supposedly some dish receivers automatically convert it to digital so u don't need an adapter) to watch tv if u have a sdtv. if u have an hdtv, u have no problems..

what i'm curious about is that '15 thing. i'm sure by then almost every household will have a hdtv. so will we need an adapter for that? or will it just look horrible? or what?

Their still going to be broadcasting in SD resolution. But SDTVs don't receive digital signals. They pick up analogue signals. So you need a converter to switch the digital signals into analogue for SDTVs to read them. The switch to digital doesn't end SD at all.

It is only when the majority of channels start broadcasting in HD that SD will be dead. And in case you haven't checked there are some 500+ SD channels and about 80 HD channels in the US. Many of which some cable carriers don't even broadcast yet. Damn Time Warner.

That's a long way off to be honest. I really thought that HD was going to be more widespread a lot quicker than it is happening. HD started a while back, and I thought by now it would be a lot more popular and commonplace than it is now. I wonder why this is happening so slowly?

Because at the moment there is no massive need for it. Here in the UK only a handfull of TV stations are HD. The only reason to buy a HDTV is for the PS3 or 360 and not everyone has either console and from those that do have one the majority won't feel the need to buy a HDTV.
Not to mention the lack of advertisements and information about HD too. SD does the job just fine. Many people just don't see the need to spend 1000 euros on a TV when their current TV still works fine.

There is really no push for it. Until the last few years the TVs were still really expensive. On top of that there was very little HD content. Now most local stations in the US provide an HD channel, but cable doesn't offer much in many cities and not everyone wants to get satillite. And of course only recently did DVD upscaling and HD movies even becoem a viable option.

Really it is the whole industries fault. They just aren't pushing the media forward which would create a desire for change. After all if I didn't have a PS3 and HD cable what need or even desire would I have for an HDTV? I can get all the local channels on the SDTV I already have. I don't want to pay $1000 for a TV that makes the wrinkles on the local news ancors face super clear. I can watch all my DVDs on my TV. There is just nothing pushing people to get an HDTV.

You ask my grandmother and she will just say why. And she isn't exactly an old woman. She is only 69 and still works. She is pretty in tune with the world. But she just doesn't see any reason to spend the money to upgrade. And I really can't blame her. I like to be on the cutting edge of technology. But even i have to admit that until recently the media just really wasn't there. And so far it is only just getting started.

Yes but give it time and all those HD-DVD exclusives will make it to Blu-ray. It is really more a matter of how long you want to wait for Transformers or what have you.

Hmm, I suppose that's true. I mean, you won't get any profit off of a discontinued format that plays on a discontinued player, so yes, that is indeed true.

I'm waiting for the LOTR series to hit Blu-Ray, if at all.

They're a bit off on the dates. I believe HD-DVD officially launched in 06 and I know for a fact it died in 08. Amusing though.
