re: Blu-ray wins DVD format war

I feel stupid asking this but will normal DVD still be coming out or are the companies that exclusively went BluRay gonna make me buy the BR disc?

re: Blu-ray wins DVD format war

DVD will remain while HDTVs settle down and the prices drop on both the TVs and BR players. Then like VHS the DVD will slowly sell cheaper and cheaper until they bring in no profit. But thats something that won't happen until 2015-2020.

It may take longer for DVDs themselves to go though. They are only just starting to replace PC CDs.

I don't know that standard DVD will last until 2015. That is another 7 years.

They've finished replacing PC CD's. I reckon they finished over a year ago.

I don't know, that sounds just about right. DVD was release in 1997. With absolutely no competition it took until about 2000 to become widely accepted and until about 2004 to completely replace VHS. And a further couple of years to replace PC CD.

With DVD as strong a format as it is, the slow growth of HDTVs, and the format war only recently coming to an end it will probably take another 2 or 3 years for Blu-ray to become widely accepted. And another 3 or 4 years after that before Blu-ray becomes the de facto standard. There is still a very long road ahead of Blu-ray. Now that it has defeated is rival it has to push the reigning king out of the ring. And right now BR is a 90 lbs weakling trying to push a sumo wrestler out of that ring. It needs to put on a bit more weight before it is even going to budge it.

re: Blu-ray wins DVD format war

why talkin bout my weight? just bc it's like i'm anorexic...geez!!

haha anyways, idk. i heard awhile ago paramount said it was going to Blu-ray and that pretty much it was over. so where u guys got this whole new idea that it's over. i def do believe blu ray won a long time ago... when paramount or whoever it was went with blu ray. they were the biggest company or somethin so if they went to HD, hd won, if they went to blu ray, blu ray won. they used both n then decided on blu ray only.

i'll see if i can find that article....

edit: ok... so it wasn't paramount. it was warner bros. source

We already knew that months ago...This thread is about Toshiba announcing that it is no longer going to be producing HD-DVD and was backing out of the format war. Thus officially ending the Format War.

360 + 2 years of live comes out more than a PS3.
Xbox 360 20Gb = $388
WiFi Adapter = $100
Play and Charge Kit = $20
Blu-Ray Add-on = $130

Total = $638

Xbox 360 Elite = $525
WiFi Adapter = $100
Play and Charge Kit = $20
Blu-Ray Add-on = $130

Total = $775

Playstation 3 80Gb = $648
Playstation 3 40Gb = $399

And both SKU's come with all the stuff you would have to buy, not to mention the 40Gig comes with Spiderman and the 80Gig with Motorstorm, i didn't add on the Xbox Live yearly subscription even though Xbox is nothing without it.

Not turning this into a console war, just stating the facts, before anyone says... The Blu-Ray add-on wouldn't do a lot to the overall price or something like that.
I never knew that you needed the plug and charge kit and wifi to play and an xbox.

XBox 360 premium with 2 games =$269.95
PLaystation 40gig:399

Xbox 360 elite bundle with 4 games(COD 4,ASS CREED, FORZA 2,MARVEL ALLIANCE), PLug and charge kit,HDMI cable, HEAdset, 3 month free xbl, 120 gig, Extra controller
:$639.99

PS3: 80gig $649
KK lets stop this before it gets out of hand now.

No, its official death was actually late 2005 early 2006 when they officially stopped producing VHS movies. But for the consumer side it was basically dead by 2004. Personally for me VHS died way back in 1999. But one has to consider public demand, supply, and production when declaring death.

Technically, even HD-DVD hasn't completely kicked the bucket. After all go into the stores today and you will still see new released on HD-DVD. Reason being that while Toshiba put the final nail in the coffin producers still have stock that they worked on for a particular release date and they still have to release it if they want any hope of breaking even on it. It is going to hurt them for a few months yet.

In the mean time they have to make the switch over to Blu-ray. And start producing new disks for that. All of which takes time. Anything that has been geared up for HD-DVD release within the next 2-3 months will still see release. After that though it is just a matter of eliminating stock.

Currently, There are developements underway to extend that up to 200GB max.

re: Blu-ray wins DVD format war

Xbox 360 20Gb: $388
2007 Lamborghini Gallardo coupe to get to Best Buy to buy the 360: $180,050
Blood of Christ that I use as fuel for my car: $1,000
Slave boy I purchased to carry all four massive discs Lost Odyssey is on, as well as switch the discs every ten seconds the game prompts you to do so: $300
Damage done to house after 360 exploded due to hardware failure: $5,780
Second Xbox 360 20Gb: $388
More fuel, of course: $1,000
Protective bullet proof glass installed around 360 to protect innocents from its hardware failures: $150
Sneak King: $5
Funeral for my mother when she attempted to insert Sneak King disc into 360 when Bill Gates came back from Larry L's house with a blood stained shirt and proceeded to bludgeon my mother to death with a large wad of cash he stole from us: $15,000

Total: A bajillion dollars

Used PS3 from Gamestop with no controller, stripped harddrive and no games: $100
God giving me an approving wink and thumbs up as I walk back home from the store: priceless

Total: $100 and a ticket to Heaven

I hope I've ended this argument once and for all and shown you that the 360 is, without a doubt, more expensive than the PS3 once you factor in the death and mayhem it causes.

but i'm just sayin, the warner bros went to blu ray. they may not control the entire market but they have a good portion. and since they went to blu ray, i saw hd goin away.

and i know we knew about that months ago, that's why i said "idk why it seems like it's a new idea"...

n actually the 360 uses hd, n was released first. the ps3 is pretty much superior hardware wise in every way to the 360 n uses blu ray so it uses the better technology. also another way to know hd was gonna die?

i mean did none of that add up? just like when flash drives came out. that's the end of cd's for data. to transfer data from comp to comp. or when cd's first came out. end of cartridges? end of floppys? so sure it's not like they are extinct bc they still are used, but very seldom. and it's not like they just went away right away, took a few years.

i mean just like sdtv, supposedly in '09 it's no more. ONLY hd. but in like '15, hd is supposed to be no more, supposed to be super hd, like 32x better. so hd has been around for awhile, n did sd just die? no...took awhile. (if it's true that it's no more in '09)

re: Blu-ray wins DVD format war

SD won't just die in '09. Analogue broadcasts are whats going to come to an end. SDTVs will still be around. However if you have one you will need a digital converter box to continue to recieve signals. HDTVs are at an advantage because they already use digital signals. And most people will likely just buy a new TV rather than getting an additional component to fix the problem. Of course if you have cable or satillite there is no problem as they already handle digital signals.

But just because we convert to digital doesn't mean we are going to convert to HD.
