Sony to reveal smaller, more efficient Cell processor at ISSCC 2008 |
quoteMore info here I think this will help reduce the cost of the PS3 and make the 40GB version to $299 at one point. Whats your take on this. ![]() ------------------- Welcome to Crisis Core forum Welcome to Bad Company 2 God of War 3 official forum community

If it really is more effective, where does this leave the PS3s with the 'less efficient' processors?

Sony is starting to gain some momentum in their hardware and software sells. They won't reduce the price until it becomes a must, which won't be for some time unless the console's upcoming releases completely flop again.

quote Red 9It leaves them right where they are now. All processors shrink with time, its how the technology works. Why do you think the PS2 got so small in its later years? Its because they have a smaller chipset inside it. -------------------

More efficient doesn't mean more powerful necessarily. For example For a few years AMD was labeling their processors with equivilent numbers. Such as say a 3500+. They did this because the processor was equal to Intels 3.5GHz processor in similar benchmark tests. However in part due to the way AMD formulated their clock speeds and how efficient the chips were it was in fact only about 2.2GHz.
So AMD had by all accounts a much more efficient processor but not really a more powerful processor. Unless of course you compared it to anoter 2.2GHz. However Again it is possible to make a processor more efficient without actually making it more powerful. Think one person doing the same amount of work as two sort of thing. It would be cheaper to employe one person for slight more than it would be to employe two at minimum. Equally so it would be cheaper to manufacture a more efficient chip that requires less to build creates less heat takes less space and does the same amount of work. ------------------- ![]() Education Forum|Books & Literature My Brute
