My younger brother asked one of his teachers about this 'Based on a True Story' stuff about a week after I bought this game three or four years ago. What you need to realize is 'BASED on' means that there might be some true facts, but it's mostly made up. According to my brother's teacher, (who has also played this game and supposedly has a friend in Japan who was on the research and development team for the game)there are only three true facts here...
1.There is a supposedly haunted mansion somewhere in Japan where the last family to live there went by the name Munakata, and their only child went missing after they'd been living there about a year. However, there was never a Himuro family living in this manor.
2.There do seem to be records of something called a "Strangling Ritual" taking place in a manor. But this manor WASNT the same manor where the Munakata family lived, and this ritual was actually more reminiscent of the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual in FFII than the one here.
3. There is rumored to be an old story of a woman who hung herself in a
sakura garden outside her home after giving birth to a stillborn child. Supposedly, her husband died mysteriously a month later, with a look on his face as if he'd been scared to death. It's rumored that anyone who lives in her home or even enters the
sakuragarden will be killed by this woman. She is commonly referred to as the
Sakura no Yuu(Ghost of Cherry Blossoms).
I don't claim to be an expert, this is just what my brother discovered through his teacher's supposed connection. The only story I can say for certain is true is the
Sakura no Yuu, but I can't honestly vouch for the others...
