re: General Discussion

I should rephrase my question really I was getting a bit excited, I know the universe in Mass Effect will be much bigger than Cyrodill for example, but there are planets to explore as well. So wont they have persistant environments?

Ya know, like how alot of the caves in Oblivion looked alike. He's thinking that with that much to explore and the map being so huge, they're might not be much variety.

GB: Tell us about the game's planets. How will we travel to them and what sort of landscapes, environments, and species can we expect to encounter while exploring them?

Casey: Mass Effect is an IP of tremendous scope. Each planet or quest is, in a sense, an “episode” of Mass Effect with a surprising and original theme. Over the course of the entire game, you will have experienced a wide range of strange and exciting locations and experiences. You’ll travel around the galaxy in a state-of-the-art starship. Inside, you’ll be able to explore several different decks and talk with crewmembers about your mission.

The locations for the main story are actually set within an even larger exploreable part of the galaxy. We were looking forward to creating our own IP for a number of reasons, one of them being the possibility to expand the scope of player experience beyond what we’ve been able to do previously. In Mass Effect, one of the most exciting new features is the ability to truly explore the galaxy that surrounds the main story. Without going into too much detail (yet!), you’ll be able to navigate through deep space to a large number of star systems, then orbit uncharted planets and even explore their surfaces on foot. This is a completely non-linear exploration experience for the player, which ties into the main story in some really fun and rewarding ways.

These planets can all be explored, both on foot and by vehicle. The size of a persistent environment is how far you can travel in any direction without loading times and as Darknet pointed there will have to be zones

This sucks. Last night I didn't get to play because of a combination of Thanksgiving and my parents wanting to watch football!

The uncharted planets themselves are all unique but the layout and design of buldings on those planets arent.

I heard this games storyline only takes like 15 hours to complete? Is this true? I remember it took me over like 30 to beat KOTOR.

If you JUST stuck to the main storyline and didnt do a single sidequest. Sure, I could see that being a possibility.

But throw in the many sidequests, and you're probably looking at around 30 hours, possibly more.

i need a wireless modem and im getting one for christmas, along with a couple xbox live subscriptions. Christmas cant come fast enough.

This games choice visit planets are limited in not only number, but ammount of worthwhile things to do, and about 20% of the planets in the game you actually land on. Don't get me wrong awesoem game awesome gameplay, never get bored with the combat, I have'nt found many rewarding let alone combat focused, side quests.

Definatly. I finished the story in just over 20 hours, that was while doing very little side missions and practically no exploring. By the time I finished the game I didn't have much money, not a lot of good equipment, and I hadn't maxed out my level. If you plan to play the story properly, the side missions are essential. Completing them gives you money and helps you level up, which make the actual storyline a lot easier.

So far on my second playthrough I've gained a few levels, earned about two millions credits, and I've barely touched the story.

re: General Discussion

So i'm guessing from the above post it has good replay value as well, which is good news. I tried to play through kotor a second time and just couldn't do it. I'm just trying to decide to ask for it for christmas or not, i'm pretty sure I am now though.

re: General Discussion

I can see loads of replay value in Mass Effect. As soon as I finished the game, I started a new one straight away. There's so much versatility in the game that I will probably end up playing through it at least 5 times.

The main reason I was so urged to play again was the dialogue, and the outcome of conversations. I really wanted to try different options to see how the game will change. I might be able to save different lives, so it'll be worth investigating. Another reason was that I barely touched the side missions, so I was quite poor by the end of the game.

I ended my first playthrough as a level 39, with about 80,000 credits and average weapons and armor. I started my second, did the start of the story, then started exploring the galaxy and doing side missions. After about 5 hours, I'm a level 47, I have the best weapons & armor in the game, and I have 4,000,000 credits.

What's also good is that not only will you get much better equipment in your second playthrough, but the game will change the enemies depending on your level. As I started my second playthrough as lvl 39, the Geth on Eden Prime already had good weaponry, high health and good shields. This stops the game from becoming too easy, although I can't say I'm having much of a challenge. But hey, I'm still on Normal mode. I'll boost it up to Hardcore on my 3rd and see how harder it will be.

Oh, and I found some animal life! There's a planet (I can't remember the name) that has a livable habitat. It has green grass, a blue sky, and stable oxygen levels. There were these wierd giant bugs on it, and some strange things called "Shifty looking cows". Both were non-hostile.

You've already completed the story? Jesus.

Anyway, I have no freaking idea wtf is going on with the Dpad. It's so confusing, Up I know tells people to go places. But what do the rest do, I press them and they seem to do absolutely nothing.

Yeah, had it done by Thursday, lol.

Up - Move to desired destination
Down - Retreat and find cover
Left - Follow
Right - Attack specified target.

(V To the above post V)

Once you finish the story you can't keep playing, unless you reload from your last save. If you start up a new story, you have the option to use the same character as before, meaning all of your levels, talents, abilities, weapons, armor, equipment and money will be transfered t o the new story.
