Well I thought I'd go and post some helpful hints for beating the game... There may be some spoilers!
If anyone wants to know more, don't be afraid to ask and I'll answer as best I can!
Hope this helps!
Making Money
It's very easy to make money hand over fist (I had over 200 000G when I finished)...
1) buy herbs/flowers. These have the major advantage of being harvested by the Herbal channel on your TV, so you don't have to take the time to pull them all when they've grown, and nearly all regrow after picking. They're generally worth 60G or more, too. So, when you can, devote an entire field to herbs (it'll take awhile to buy so many, but it's worth it). However, don't do this until you have the robot, or you'll have to water them all.
2) Be cautious of what you buy. The villagers are very generous in this game, so there are few things you need to buy outside of crops. You'll be given all of your tools excepting the hammer (and I think the axe). You'll also accumulate 3 baskets by the end of the game, so don't waste your money on them. SPOILER: You'll also only need to purchase enough Power Earth Sand to break up the garden in the shrine; you'll be given pretty much enough of it at the end of the game to break up your fields. Don't bother with the toy gun and boomerang - you'll never need them. Also, you likely won't need the tent until the end of the game, because the map's actually not as large as it seems.
3) As the booklet tells you, invest in a scale pack. Range far to the warm portions of the island - some of the fruit there are very valuable, and you can make up to 12000 in a day. Pick one thing at a time and check the value before filling your pack with things that are worth nearly nothing (i.e. mushrooms...).
4) Once you have animals, care for them every day, because this will raise the value of their products. Also, collect the eggs and milk, and process them into mayonnaise and cheese (an egg is worth 50G, whereas mayo is worth 150G). If you don't collect them the game will automatically ship them.
(More on animals in Farming).
Farming
1) You have to be wary of storms in this game - they really do a number on your crops, and they occur frequently! Very few crops are hardy against the weather, too. Crops that take a long time to mature, like corn, are a bad choice because it's very likely that the entire batch will get wiped out before it matures! If you intend to plant things that can be harvested more than once, then plant a lot - that way if a storm hits, you won't loose everything! Things like tomatoes, hot peppers, green peppers, and peas, are a good choice because you can often harvest more than one vegetable from each plant, thus if a storm hits you don't lose as much.
2) It's not immediately apparent as to how you acquire animals, because you must first unlock the blue doors on the farm, then speak with Jonathan, who seems to be easiest to find at the bar after 20:00. Speak to him to get the Cluck-o-matic, then you can order chickens from the Ranching channel on TV. After you have at least one chicken, speak to him again to get the Sheep-o-Matic, and get sheep from the Ranching channel. Finally, speak with him a third time to get the Moo-o-matic, and follow the same process to get cows. Don't freak if you miss caring for them, because the farm will automatically feed them. It will also shear your sheep for you, so you don't have to bother with that.
3) I actually couldn't find my barns until nearly the end of the game, but they're at the south end of the storage floor ^^;
4) WORK WITH YOUR TOOLS!!! The robot is capable of watering, collecting resources, and getting rid of dead plants, etc. but unless you plan to be away overnight, you should do this all yourself! You will find better tools in the blue chests (and get a watering can from Masami), but you won't be able to use them without first leveling your current tools! So.... MAKE WORK FOR YOURSELF! The daily chores of farming won't be enough, so make work! Hoe unused field, then water it, then flatten it out with the hammer and repeat! If you run out of PP, make a visit to the Shine Pod to refill it, or equip one of the upgrades that the robot has (once you get them).
5) Once your tools are upgraded, hold down the triangle button for longer when you use the tool. This uses less PP, but gets better results (i.e. hoe 3 squares at once).
6) You must unlock fields by placing 4 gems of the same colour in the corner altars around a field. The next day they will glow, and break down the paving stones. I don't know what activated it, but at some point the altars may begin to float. Once this happens you can switch out the gems for any colour, and then use 4 of the same colour to open a new field; however, a field with 4 unicoloured gems acquires special properties (as listed in the inventory), so switching out gems will negate these bonuses.
[General]
1) You actually need to interact with the villagers very little, even though the booklet seems like you must visit them often. They rarely say anything new, so you rarely need to bother with them. Do check around once in awhile, though, at odd hours of the day (especially at night) because Masami will give you a watering can, and you need to speak with Jonathon to get animals.
2) If you have empty time, either fill it with make-work to upgrade your tools, or cook! You don't need to use any of your own produce in cooking - apparently Dr. Hope keeps your fridge stocked for you. The more times you cook a recipe, the better you will get at it! You can view a list of recipes in your R pause menu, by selecting the little tri-corder looking icon, and pressing the right arrow to scroll through all your stats. This helps to add to your human status - but it doesn't restore PP.
3) After unlocking a field with a new colour of gem, re-check all the doors of that colour to see if they are unlocked! Some never open before the end of the game, but any required to progress in the plot will yield.
4) Some of the seeds seem to be more expensive if you buy them from the Shop-o-Million vending machines (located in the blue door to the left of Franco's room), so it can be worth the time to drive into town and pick them up. On the whole, however, the vending machines save time when you want to shop!
5) Make a survey of your farm every once in awhile to look for resources (rocks and wood) to break down and sell. They're not worth much to start with, but it's something to do and every bit helps.
6) If you have the robot, when the season is on its last day, make sure he's NOT set to collect refuse! You have few opportunities to work on upgrading the sickle, because you get few weeds, but cutting down your dead crops will help a lot - if you don't disable it, he'll have most of it cleaned up by the time you wake!
[Other]
1) No, you can't marry.
2) Dr. Hope will give you the buggy.
3) You will be given more seed bags than you ever need.
