beccyorange, it usually means that the content is potentially highly disturbing to people under 17, not for a lack of maturity but for a lack of the proper brain development to register information in a healthy way. Teenage girls experience a lot of brain development during the years of 13-16, which is why the highest suicide rate for youth is 10-14. However, teenage boys go through that development around 14-17, which is why Mature is rated 17+.

Basically, during grade 8, the female brain suddenly starts developing more quickly. The bulk of this development happens during grade 9, and during grade 10, starts slowing down but is still happening.

Then comes late adolescence, in which the brain is more developed, save the area of prioritizing, impulse control, and problem-solving.

Mature rating isn't because adults don't think we're mature, it's because science states that our brains are not yet fully equipped for the content.

Hmm... maybe I should go into neuroscience.

I used to think I was mature enough for everything. Then some stuff happened to me... and let's just say I'm really glad that there are ratings.

But since you're a girl, your brain is already developed enough for 17+. It's just that the brains of guys your age are not.

If you ever read Kuroshitsuji, you, too, will develop a fear of mysterious circuses.

I was depressed and bulimic for many years, and my exposure to 17+ material certainly contributed a whole lot. Ratings are there for a reason.

I agree with the whole 17+ thing, for sure. Again I want to reinforce that I never would have posted that link here if I had actually been paying attention to what the rating was, and I apologize. Of course people have to choose for themselves what's appropriate for them, but as this is generally-speaking a younger forum, I should have been watching for that.

That being said, I've been involved in lots of 'M' and 'T' rated RPs here on Neo, and I've never found anything to be that bad. I know people often use those ratings to give people more 'freedom', and probably to keep the younger kids out if they want something a little more serious. Of course, there is always the chance that something will be too inappropriate for younger members, so caution is always important.
