Real World Military Discussion

Continuing with Mikes “Military aircraft topic thread.” I’ve created this one to continue those discussions and more without having to go backwards and forwards between the two forums.

Check this out: http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123012131

Wow that is pretty interesting stuff they'll be using.
So basically this stuff is to replace plexiglass with
a more stronger material that has to be replaced less
and will help keep cost down.

Flying toasters should still be a perfectally acceptable term for those things.

Frankly, I find this to be pretty darn cool. I didn't see anything in there on it, (I just sorata skimmed it and tried to pick out the finer points) but did it say anything regarding what this glass's RCS might be? I'm curious as to if this could be applied to cockpit canopies for a stronger material that can also be more effective for aircraft such as the F-22.

SAAB UAV'S

I recently found out that in addition to producing Gripen,Viggen, amd Drakens,SAAB has an ambitious UAV program as well:

Why keep designing UAVs anyway, satellite recon is advancing more and more every day. Soon enough you'll be able to spot a flee on a dogs back 50 miles up, lol.

I've got some interesting stuff that I'll post as sson as I find my resources. It's about a bomber which was testing the first heat seeking missile technology, but ended up crashing. When I find my papers, I'll clue you in.

This comes from the UK news section of AirForces Monthly.

RAF TORNADO PILOT QUALIFIES ON B-2A SPIRIT.

Squadron Leader David Arthurton,an RAF Tornado GR.1
pilot from Lossiemouth, has become the first non-American
to qualify on the Northrop-Grumman B-2A Spirit stealth
bomber. As part of the exchange programme between the RAF
and US.Air Force he was posted to the 509th Bomb Wing at
Whiteman AFB,Missouri, where he completed an interview
where he completed an intensive training course with the
394th Combat Training Squadron.

He is now serving with the 13th Bomb Squadron as part of
a three-year tour, following his selection for the post in
2004.

I must admit I didn't we had such a royal airforce
I guess UAV is short for Unmanned Airborne Vehicle?

Also:
Gripen means The Griffin, and its class is JAS, Jakt-Attack-Spaning, which means Hunt-Attack-Scouting.
Draken means The Dragon
Viggen means The Tufted Duck (I'm not very sure about that one).

You know SAAB makes cars too, and as we are taking down our military, I think they maybe will stop making new ones.

Because UAV's provide troops with real time intel, while sat img provides more of an operational, non-tactical, type of intel that usually is old by the time troops see it. Dismissed.

Indian Navy Mig-29 deal signed.

On December 6 2005, the final contract was signed
by the Indian Navy to buy 12 Mig-29Ks and four two
seat Mig-29KUB trainners to operate from India's
new aircraft carrier INS Vikramadiya (formerly
the Russian Navy's Admiral Gorshkov).

The intial agreement for the aircraft acquisition was
included as part of the Gorshkov contract in 2004.This
arrangement includes also setting up warehouses and
technological service centers in India to ensure an
uninterupted supply of spare parts for the aircraft.

Also Russia is offering to sell India several Long-range
Tu-22M3 Backfire C bombers.

Hey by the way Berkut Nightwolf, I'm going to see if I cant send some pics of those planes that you have in your signature from Iraq. I have plenty of pics of shot down and bombed out Iraqi aircraft, I'll see if i can post them.

I think that's impossible since the aircraft in Berkuts Sig is the Avro Arrow. A Canadian aircraft which never made it into service, let alone get shot down in iraq?

re: Real World Military Discussion

Enlisted in the Marine Corps! I'm heading out August 21st. Till then i'll be training in the DEP program and then i'm off to Pendleton for 13 weeks, hopefully becoming a full fledged US Marine. I don't qualify for a pilot position without a bachelor's, but am gunning for aviation maintenance / electronics fields.

Hopefully things'll go great. Might even end up piloting UAV's. Or they might toss my option out the window and send me into the infantry, which I wouldn't mind either.
