I recently finished the game with Ishida and it seems to have unlocked levels of game play.

I'm going to play through with Ishida again but put it on a high level (1-5) and see if the AI is any better.

I think to enjoy Kessen is to attack, if you hide and defend it is way to easy.

It will obviously slowly get more difficult to complete with the 1-5 difficulty levels. I prefer to defend, but also attack as it can be good to do both, unless you have a small amount of troops and in that situation, I would usually defend till reinforcements.

The AI isn't any harder really... the attack plan is just different, and with each level you get less and less information about the enemy generals and the amount of troops.

Defending does make it way too easy, but if you focus only on attack then it you'll usually find they tend to go on the defensive and it gets turned around, a mix of both is good . I like to set up two groups, 1 with about two thirds of the army, on the defensive, and another with mostly mounted soldiers, once they attack the main group I send in the other to their main camp, and when main group is done, they'll join in and finish off the weakened remainder >:-].
