Sega, on the heels of last year's Sonic Jump, has announced a new mobile title coming to iOS "soon". Introducing Sonic Dash, an infinite runner from UK developer Hardlight Studio -- also known for Viking: Battle for Asgard. If you know mobile titles, you know what to expect with Sonic Dash. Leaderboards, social features, unlockable hijinks, and plenty of microtransations. Sonic Jump only costs $1.99, and we expect Sonic Dash to be similarly priced (or maybe a bit more).
It's a little depressing to think that in this day and age titles like the episodic Sonic (epiSonic) series can't be successful, but mobile titles like Sonic Jump can. Still, if it means SEGA can make a profit and keep churning out new 3D Sonic titles, then I say keep at it. It would be a sad day if SEGA and Sonic went underwater, because they kept trying to live up to fan expectations without respecting the current market for games.
Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Temple Run, if that's what SEGA means by "infinite runner" and I can absolutely see Sonic starring in such a game. Hopefully "soon" means with the next week, though, because otherwise there's a dozen other mobile titles I met get distracted by. Look for Sonic Dash on the iOS App Store... soon.
