How Formal Should We Be?

This is an issue which has come up on a few occasions. How formal are NeoWikis expected to be?

I know on Portals, especially toward the end of the first Portal era, they did get a bit less formal. When I wrote this for the Sonic Portal, it was written in an informal style. You can see it even now. Maybe I'm used to more formal styles from Wikipedia, but it seems strange on a Wiki. So, do NeoWikis have to seem formal?

re: How Formal Should We Be?

That all depends on what the article is about. I mean, when working with the Megaman Portal I often went with a very "matter of factly" tone and that works fine for certain pages but not as well for others. Boss strategies, for one, tended to be more direct and carried a sense of informality because it's essentially "me talking to you".

re: How Formal Should We Be?

I just write so it is concise and easy to understand, with words that are not necessarily everyday, but are not 'fancy'. Usually I try to stay formal and informative, but occasionally I go off and have a sentence that asks a question or something, to make the reader more relaxed and not feel like they're reading a textbook. Here's an example.

re: How Formal Should We Be?

I'd prefer a professional yet interesting look to the Resident Evil Wiki content. I personally do not like reading over-personalised accounts, add a little humour but please try to keep things in line and to the point.

re: How Formal Should We Be?

We should maintain "casual formality". Things don't have to be completely stiff, but the grammar, style, and language should feel appropriately concise and agile. Certainly no internet speak should make it in there - all the more so to help international readers who may not be as familiar with slang.

re: How Formal Should We Be?

The members working on the elder scrolls Neowiki are aiming for a professional outlook but directly connecting with the reader. To put it bluntly, instead of treating them like idiots or rocket scientists, we are simply talking (or writing) to them like we world talking face to face with a friend, explaining the game.

We are also taking the complex areas of the game and simplifying them into tables and once we have the backbone of text within the walkthrough section, me (or possibly allowing a volunteer on the team) to go through the game(s) to gain the important secreenshots of stages, so the readers won't just have text to look at but screenshots as well.

But of course that is how we are handling it
