While he's appeared in plenty of great games Wario has always been a B-list Nintendo character. His cause isn't helped by average adventures such as the GameCube's Wario World, but perhaps one of the reasons he's always lurked behind the likes of Mario and Link is because the series he's most famous for has provided some of the strangest videogame experiences of the last ten years. From the GBA original to the GameCube conversion and the DS's Touched!, WarioWare has always been critically acclaimed, yet the mental micro-game compilation hasn't managed to shake off its reputation as a quirky game that's a bit of throwaway fun but not much more. Well, hopefully that's all about to change as Smooth Moves is a genuine Nintendo classic and if there's any justice it will propel its star into the big league. There are so many ways to complete Smooth Moves mad micro-games games that it will never, ever get boring. You hold the Remote above your head and squat up and down for a weightlifting game, balance it in the palm of your hand to balance a broom, flick it to sautee food, jerk it up and down to sprint towards a finish line Smooth Moves is very, very funny. You may have already read about some of the silly games like the one where you have to insert a set of false teeth into a granny's mouth but that's just the beginning, and while many supposedly funny games will make you s*bleep*, Smooth Moves will make you laugh out loud. Not only is there the series' usual bum-related humour but there are some surreal comedy moments that are as baffling as anything from the Mighty Boosh! Wait until you hear the instructions for holding the Remote - they're just so odd. Besides the toilet humour there really is something for everyone here. There are sports games, shooting games and some driving games but the real treat for Nintendo fans comes when you reach the 9-Volt levels in the Story mode. WarioWare has always included a few retro treats but this is the first game that celebrates Nintendo's history from the NES all the way through to the Wii, taking in Mario, Animal Crossing and Zelda before climaxing in a brilliant StarFox boss level that reminds you just why Fox McCloud was once so revered. It's incredible. Yet for all these five-second bites of genius WarioWare would still be nothing more than a good giggle if not for the unlockable games. Starting the Story mode at Wario's house, you'll see an amusing animated short before taking on a selection of micro-games and a boss level. Completing this will unlock more characters - each with their own cartoon and micro-games - and some superb new games. The first one of these is Block Star, an incredibly addictive puzzle game that has you balancing falling blocks on a tray. These blocks come in different shapes and sizes and you have to use the Remote to move the tray, tilting it to make sure they land at the right angle and don't fall off the tray. It's nearly as addictive as Tetris and could be a game in its own right, yet it's just tossed away here as an unlockable mini-game. Once you complete the Story mode you'll unlock the multiplayer games and while there isn't anything as original as that turtle-balancing game in the GameCube version, Survival mode is as much fun as you can have on the Wii with 12 players and one Remote. It's a game of pass the baton as 12 characters fly across the top of the screen and each player has to complete a micro-game before handing the Remote onto the next player. It's a real family game and it would be so funny watching your older relatives making fools of themselves with the Remote. It's what Wii is all about. Funny, addictive and challenging - there really is nothing bad to say about Smooth Moves. But if you tell people that it deserves to take its place alongside Mario 64 and Twilight Princess as one of the Nintendo greats they may laugh in your face. Force them to play it and they'll laugh even harder. Only this time, for right reasons. ![]() ![]() Ocarina Of Time Comes to Virtual Console Mario Kart 64, Street Fighter II and Super Mario World also on the way The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time will be coming to Virtual Console during the first three months of the year. Nintendo has announced that 36 games will be available between January and March and in addition to Zelda, the highlights include Mario Kart 64, Street Fighter II and Super Mario World. Yet it's The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time that's undoubtedly the most exciting game of them all. Until Twilight Princess was released on Wii in December, Ocarina Of Time was widely acknowledged as not only the best Zelda adventure ever but one of the greatest videogames ever made. Released on N64 in 1998 it was the first 3D Zelda game and not only was it better looking than any game at the time, its epic plot and time-warping gameplay make it every bit as vital today. If you've never played Ocarina Of Time you have to download it when it comes to Virtual Console. Just behind Ocarina Of Time is Mario Kart 64. Many argued at the time whether the N64 racer was actually better than the simple SNES original, but whatever your opinion, Mario Kart 64 was always a joy to play, especially in multi-player mode. Mario will also be showing up in Super Mario World, the brilliant SNES adventure that saw the plumber leap onto Yoshi's back for the first time. This game is also on GBA where it is known as Super Mario Advance 2. Another absolute classic is Street Fighter II. With its fast-paced fighting action and amazing special moves it is still widely regarded as the best 2D beat-'em up ever and it will be great to have a two-player game again on Virtual Console. The final Nintendo game to be confirmed is Super Probotector, the 2D SNES shoot-'em up. As for Sega stuff, perhaps the highlight is the side-scrolling fighting game, Streets Of Rage, originally released on SNES in 1991. Also released is a shoot-'em up called Bio-Hazard Battle, a platformer named Bonanza Bros. and Comix Zone, a comic book-themed beat-'em up. Finally, three Turbografx games have also been announced. There's a role-playing game called Double Dungeons, Soldier Blade, a vertical-scrolling shooter and the 2D platformer, New Adventure Island. There are no confirmed release dates for any of these games yet but we'll keep you updated on the latest Virtual Console games when they become available every Friday. ![]() read all that yet? well lets go to page 3 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 3 welcome to the monthly top ten games where we will say what the top ten games are 1=best 10=worst the best game of the month is........
