Lack of, I Dunno, Strategy?

Alright, I went back to playing Warcraft III a while ago, and it was after a brief period where I got back into playing Dragonshard. The first two things I noticed, was that the graphics weren't as much of an improvement as I originally thought, as water is amazingly well done in the Warcraft series, and two, that there was a lot more strategy in Warcraft.

Now, it might just have been me, but did anyone else notice that the game strategy seemed to be "make big group, move and conquer!" sort of game? While possibly fun for a while, I think the game has pretty much died, and would have been very close to without a lot of the elements which make it fun if not for the underground.

Opinions?
