Thinking about switching?

Well I have grown tired of my PS3 and now want to get a Xbox 360, I have a few questions though.

Is it 1080p?

Is there a lot of hardware problems like RROD anymore?

Is the longevity of the 360 still good? (Will another Xbox come out soon?)

Can you play DVD's on it?

Is Live that much better than PSN?

Is there any really sick exclusives coming out?

What would I need to get set up? (play and charge, wireless, etc.)

That's about all I can think of right now but if y'all can think of some other things that's cool too.

Is it 1080p?
Yes. It has an HDMI port on the back, which allows you to output 1080p.

quote

Not nearly as much. RRoD hardly ever happens now. Some other problems may occur, but it's all much later in the 360's life. You can pretty much guarantee a couple years with no problems. Normal problems can be repaired for free for one year after purchase date. RRoD and the error E74 can be repaired for free for three years after purchase date.

I haven't heard any news directly stating any plans on the next console.

quote

Yes.

No one can deny that Xbox Live has more features than PSN. It's well-worth the money.

quote

Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Halo: Reach, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Fable III, Gears of War 3(?).

re: Thinking about switching?

it supports it, but not all games output in 1080p. the vast majority are only 720.

quote

it does but not as much anymore. the Jasper chipset has solved most of the RROD problems, but it can still happen. when Valhalla comes out next year, that should theoretically eliminate RROD altogether.

what Kyle said, no announcements so far. im putting it around 2012-2013 myself.

you get what you pay for TBH. or at least thats my and several others opinions. theres a reason PSN is free, you can play online and thats just about it.

quote

like what Kyle said, theres some good things, they are all next year pretty much though. although im not sure if Left 4 Dead 2 will be exclusive. its at least coming on PC too.

first, decide what you want to get. look at this link here, and scroll down to where it says "which console is for you". it will compare the Arcade and the Elite and tell you what comes with what. Arcade's MSRP is $200 and the Elite's is $300. feel free to ask more questions and we can help you from there.

re: Thinking about switching?

As a slight note, I'm fairly confident Left 4 Dead 2 won't come out on Playstation. Valve/Gabe isn't willing to work on the console and they've said the half-arsed ports lowering their standard of game isn't acceptable.

re: Thinking about switching?

It seems like so much money to get going. Like 400 for the MW2 Xbox plus 100 for wireless plus 50 for live plus 20 for a play and charge. The ps3 is just 300 for all that. I thought Xbox is supposed to be cheaper?

It's cheaper just for the basic console. The arcade model is only $200.

Just avoid wireless altogether, if you can. I agree that the adapter is overpriced, and ethernet is more reliable anyways. If you can't avoid it, then Amazon has the adapter for only $68. They also have one year of live for only $39.50.

where is the rule that says you have to buy the MW2 360? thats only for serious gamers, it has way more than the average person needs. if you dont have anyone to play with on the same console, you wont need more than 1 controller, and 250GB HDD is way more than you will likely need.

you also dont need a wireless adapter. like Kyle said, better if you can skip it altogether and use an ethernet cable which you can pick up for a couple bucks. yes you will need $50 to play online, but its for a whole year and Live has a lot more features than PSN. also, the Play and Charge kit is pretty much useless. if you want to go with a wireless controller, get the battery charger, which is not much more expensive and includes a 2nd battery.

i would suggest to get an Arcade, and look around on eBay or Amazon for a 20 or 60GB HDD, which you can find for pretty cheap now.

re: Thinking about switching?

It's rather hard seeing how my modem and router are in my basement and my tv/gaming station is on the first floor. I just thought I'd get the MW2 version cause it comes with the game and a second controller so I can play with my brother.

re: Thinking about switching?

ok i see.

i really doubt you would need the 250GB HDD that comes with it. so heres something you could do: get that 360, sell the HDD on eBay (they seem to be going for upwards of $200), then buy a smaller HDD (20GBs for pretty cheap), and you should come out pretty far ahead.

re: Thinking about switching?

Maybe I could get my internet provider to hook something up? I think there is a spot to hook up a modem behind my tv. Then just go with the elite and a game plus live? Do they still have the pro out?

I don't think it's possible to have two modems on the same network. Unless you have two different phone lines, or two different cable lines, it won't work properly. I suppose you could move your modem and router upstairs, then buy a wireless adapter for your PC (assuming it's downstairs without one already). Normal wireless adapters are quite a bit cheaper than the gaming ones, so it would be cheaper that way.

A more advanced way of doing things would be to buy a second router, set it to client mode (which will likely require you to install third-party firmware onto it), then that way your second router can connect wirelessly to your one downstairs. Then you can just connect your 360 to the second router via ethernet. It's more complicated, but much cheaper than buying a wireless adapter, as routers are relatively cheap.

As for the Pro model of the 360, they no longer manufacture them. Some stores may still have some leftover, however.
