re: Thread Ring of Death

Q: What are the different red ring combinations?
A:

One Flashing Light: Specific hardware failure. Problem can be determined by the error code displayed on your screen. Note: Error code "E74" is free to repair under three-year warranty.

Two Flashing Lights: Overheating. Check to make sure Xbox 360 is given proper ventilation. Objects blocking the fan vents can quickly cause the Xbox 360 to overheat.

Three Flashing Lights: General hardware failure OR temporary loss of power. Be sure that the connections to the Xbox 360's external power supply haven't been lost, and that the Xbox 360 hasn't been unplugged from your electricity socket. If everything checks out, and the three red lights still pertain, then you have what is commonly known as the "Red Ring of Death". The best thing to do is to have it repaired by Microsoft. It is repairable for free under warranty for three years.

Four Flashing Lights: AV cable cannot be detected. Be sure that your AV cable is correctly connected to both the Xbox 360 and your television or monitor. If problem persists, the best solution is to substitute the cable for another one.

Q: How does Microsoft's warranty for the Xbox 360 work exactly?
A: Xbox 360's with three flashing red lights, or one red light and the error code "E74", are repairable for free for up to 3 years after the purchase date. All other hardware problems are under warranty for one year.

Q: How do I send in my Xbox 360 for repairs/How do I check to see if it is still in warranty?
A: You can begin the process by going here. Once you register your console (or if it is already registered), you will be told your current warranty status. At this point, if you wish to repair your console, simply press the "Request a Repair" button. You will then be asked to select your problem type, describe your problem, and choose your shipping method.

Q: How much does the repair cost if the Xbox 360 is out of warranty?
A: All repairs cost $99 once the Xbox 360 is out of warranty.

re: Thread Ring of Death

Quick question: to prevent overheating, about how large of a space is safe for an Xbox 360 to overheat slowly?

I would give it at least 6-8 inches on each side. Basically just enough so that the hot air doesn't circulate back to the 360. It's probably a good idea to make sure it's not near any other electronic devices that are constantly on either.

I've had times where I've had DVD players on top of my TV and over a certain time the DVD player would not longer work. It has happened with CD units as well. I have this somewhat round plate of glass sitting on top of my TV and on top of that is my 360. Do you think that might cause damage in the long run?

ALL Xbox's can get RRoD. Doesn't matter what type of Xbox it is. What does matter is the chip inside it. Although you can't break open your xbox to look at it, if it is a newer model, you most likely will have a good chip. I can't remember the names of them at this moment, but the older models had this one that overheated like no other.

I wouldn't think a TV would get hot enough to mess a DVD player up. I would imagine it's either just a coincidence, or if you have a CRT TV, it's possible that the magnetic field it creates is messing up other electronic devices around it. Or possibly one of the speakers is blown, which would also cause that problem.

I got an Elite today and it was a jasper chip.

When i turned it on plugged it on my tv, the start settings came up and stuff

Next minute i got red rings. Brand new xbox 360 elite

I took it back to the store and they tested it, worked fine with green lights.
