	Log in to remove this sponsored message Is this story I heard about dial-up Internet on cell phones really possible and/or true? If so, is it more like a satellite link since that is how I gather cell phones work?

	Yes, I think there already are some like that. (Phones that can go on the internet). Its amazing how high-tech the cell phones are becoming!

	you have been able to get on the internet through a mobile for years... it only runs at 9.6Kbs so it is incredibly slow. It works nothing like a satilite link. Works just like a normal dial-up modem. Satilite links are so incredibly expensive I bet less than 1% use them. Satilite link is only one way too, you use a normal modem to dial up and request the web page and it is then ssent to you via satilite. All very speedy, for downloads at least. It is possible to get a satilite set up were you upload via satilite too, but unless you are the dictator of a small contry it is out of the price range for most. Or were asking about Wirless Application Protocol (WAP), which is long dead in my opinion. 	I thought that it was possible. 9.6 Kbps is a lot slower than my old computer was, and certainly is slower than my mom's computer. Thanks for the input.

	9K is unheard of, and probably is nearly useless. But I am sure that they will sooner or later come up with a cell phone that can go as fast as DSL!

	One number. 3 3rd generation phones have broadband connectivity. The extremely lovely NEC e606 sets, for example, have a download rate of 384kbps and an upload of 64kbps. However, aside from the spectacular plethora of 3G services given (such as the latest news bulletins, weather forecasts, film clips, football highlights, text-based content, games and more), they have no real means to access the internet. This is because 3G phones are still in their initial phase. It'll be the sales reaction that determines whether these technologies are priced at a point enough for the average user and whether it is worth developing them even further than they currently are. This is partly why Londoners may find that, even though the city is littered with huge 3G UMTS coverage areas, the phones will sometime revert to their 2G GSM cousins. I am sure sales will peak once the prices hit their inevitable drop, until then you'll need to shell out a little to get the handset and subscriptions. As for internet browsing on these phones, you could always upload a browsing application to the phone for that very purpose once one is created (which I am sure one will be) or just wait for newer models to be created to compete with the new technology. Whichever way you look at it, one thing is for certain, Three's the future.

	Now I never knew that there was such a thing as broadband Internet on cell phones because of the previous responses in this thread up until yours, Jeevan. Thanks for telling me. That speed (384/64) is 1/2 of my current DSL speed. Not bad for a cell phone IMO.

	I know it can be quite good having the internet on your phone and the broadband etc. Advancing Technology is excellent, but I think it would never catch on! Well people will slash out on it, but I myself prefer the good ol' Computer. What does everyone else think

	Yeh, 9.6kbps is a real killer, but it's not useless. I use my mobile (or cell, whatever) as a modem for my laptop, my only available option due to lack of a phone line for a while. ------------------- quote Daisy I was born at night, but not LAST night.

	I guess it'd come in handy in such an instance, like when you have no other choice like that. Imagine having broadband on a cell phone. That'd be way cool IMO.

	3G is kinda funky I suppose. You can actually get speeds of up to 2 Megabits per second. But this depends on where you are and what phone etc... 	I have Wap and GPRS on my 8310 cell- phone, It would work with 14k speed if used as a modem when used with laptop computer. ------------------- BDK Forever Europe
