Since when do ninja use Katana?

Hmmmm.. Round tsuba, 3 and a half foot curved blade...if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...
Besides, even if it isn't a katana, is definitely not a ninja sword.

Ninja used guerrilla warfare, they where cultural outcasts who lived in the mountains with no access to professional sword makers or high quality materials. The Shinto religion played a big part in their lives. They worshipped earth and nature and had no special reverence for swords.

The fact still remains that weather he should be using a katana or not, it is physically impossible to draw a katana from your back.

The fact that anything is possible in a game is just a copout. By that reasoning he could be running around smacking people with giant banana peels. Infinite possibilities work best when grounded with some sense of logic and realism. Besides, if you watch him put his sword back in it's scabbard, the first foot or so just phases into the scabbard because they could not find a way around the physics. It just kind of ruins the illusion of the reality in the game.

I also wouldn't say I'm enjoying the game, trying to get master ninja on all levels is more than a little difficult.

There are some things they can get away with and others they can't. I like to use the "movie test" when looking at games. Say Hollywood made a Ninja Gaiden movie, if Ryu ran along a wall to get over a gap no one would care, but if the movie skipped a frame every time he drew his sword or returned it to his scabbard because the actors arm wasn't long enough people would have a fit.

The idea of ninja as "fallen samurai" is one of many. I've also heard that the first ninja where actually Chinese immigrants fleeing after the rebellion. In any case the chance of a ninja using a katana does not seem as remote as I my have once thought. Thanks to Tidezen for the interesting reading material. The thought that ninja where samurai who followed their hearts and conscience rather than their oppressive daimyo is both romantic and quite intriguing. I didn't mean to start such a controversy with this post but I think it's been a positive experience and I stand corrected about my initial statement. I still wish he'd wear the darn thing on his waste though.

I hope for your sake your joking. Ryu's Dragon Sword is a normal sized katana, approx 3 ft. in length. If a katana was supposed to be 3 times that… well let's do the math shall we? 3x3=9 that would make the average katana 9ft long. And you think I need to learn my swords?

A Hanwei IS a katana, and further more it's LARGER than a regular katana with a smaller curve.

Snowfox is correct; I love this game and have said repeatedly that these are minor issues that I wanted to just throw out there for people to contemplate. I don't think it would be less attractive for Ryu to draw his sword from his hip. In fact, in the original games, that's exactly what he did. As for PyroJ's claim, I'd like to know just how long this alleged katana is. I'm 5'9 and I can't draw any of my katana that way, I have six of them btw. I CAN draw a Wakizashi from my back. But a Wakizash is not a katana.

No hard feelings SUPA_NINJA. Does anybody know what the word Ryu means? I've heard it many times in my search for info on ninja and it appears in places other than names. I know Hayabusa means Peregrine Falcon.

Yup. While we're at it, does anyone know what gaiden means?

Never played DOA so I don't know when it came out. The earliest version I've heard of was released on the Sega Saturn in Japan, which would make it nowhere near as old as Ninja Gaiden.
