General Information

Here's some information about the game.

quote Ubisoft - 10th May 2005
Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest videogame publishers, announced that Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Lockdown, the fourth installation of the multi-million unit selling franchise, will ship worldwide in September 2005 for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox video game system from Microsoft and the Nintendo GameCube. The PC-CD Rom, developed by Red Storm Entertainment, is scheduled for an early 2006 release.

1. Why was Lockdown delayed, what areas have you been focusing on with the extra time, and when will it be released?

For positive financial reasons Rainbow Six Lockdown was not needed for release in Spring 2005. This extra time enabled the Lockdown development team to polish a high quality product even further and to create the superior graphics, AI interaction, and gameplay that Rainbow fans expect. The additional time also allows us time for extra testing and bug-fixing so we can deliver the best possible product. In addition, on the PS2, the team has focused on the gameplay in each mission to increase the fun and playability of the single player experience. Both the XBox and PS2 versions of Rainbow Six Lockdown will be released in September 2005. We think that fans will be happy with the end product and that the delay will provide fans with an even better Rainbow experience than they ever could have imagined.

2. What new features does Lockdown bring to the Rainbow Six series?

In single player on PS2, you will be able to play as sniper Dieter Weber, and assist your teammates as they move through some of the more difficult missions of the game. This gives the player a new gameplay experience in Single Player. We wanted the game to be immersive for all types of players. As the story develops and the missions change, the player will automatically transition between Weber the sniper and Chavez, the squad leader. As an example, one of the missions is set in a ferry crossing the English Channel. The team is inserted via helicopter. The player will start the mission as Weber, providing cover for his team while they insert onto the ferry. Once Weber has done his job, the player will transition into the role of Ding on the ferry and will lead the team to complete the mission objectives.

Another great new feature is the use of the all new Motion Sensor. The new Motion Sensor detects movement within a set distance (even through walls). The user will find this extremely helpful in trying to get a picture of how dangerous the next room might be.

Finally, in PS2 multiplayer, for the first time ever, you'll be able to play as a bad guy! Choose from one of the Mercenary or Rainbow characters, or create your own in our new custom character creator. Also in multiplayer, we're introducing the Rivalry game mode, where you'll need to complete 2 of 3 objectives before the other team.

3. What type of gamer is Lockdown aimed at?

We've always kept hardcore Rainbow fans in mind, but we also wanted to give new players a fighting chance with Lockdown. Long time fans shouldn't worry though - any features we've added for novice players can easily be removed for the more elite players.

4. Lockdown has a stronger focus on the characters in your team than previous Rainbow Six games, how does this improve the game experience?

In Lockdown, we want you to care more about your fellow teammates – they are not just extra lives – they are your squad. Your teammates talk to you and with each other much more. In addition, the story also focuses in more closely on team member interactions. You'll get to know more about each character, and you'll fight to save them when your own team member is taken hostage.

Also, we've spent a lot of time making sure teammates aren’t just "targets". They move with you, or follow your commands intelligently. They'll provide cover for you and themselves, and even scout out trouble ahead. Overall, in Rainbow Six Lockdown, you'll feel more a part of a team of unique, highly trained operatives than ever before.

5. What locations will Team Rainbow visit during the game?

You'll visit 13 locations throughout the 16 missions – these include Amsterdam, Scotland, France, Gibraltar, and the Sahara Desert.

6. Why did you choose to go with Korn and Fear Factory for the music for Lockdown?

We wanted to use a soundtrack with a more edgier feel for Lockdown than we had in past Rainbow titles. So we have combined the power and adrenaline of these bands which match well with our action elements of our game with the work of Rainbow music composer Jim Crew.

7. How much of the environment will you be able to interact with?

Thanks to Havok 2 physics, there is a lot of interactivity with objects in the world. You'll always see things flying around, especially in gunfights. The enemies also react to sound, so if you're not careful, bumping into a table and knocking off a glass could mean lots of trouble for you and your team!

8. What's your favourite Lockdown moment so far?

So far, my favorite moment is shooting enemies off rooftops and watching them plummet to the ground. A close second is using either a shotgun or frag grenade to send enemies flying. Then there are the white phosphorus grenades, which set enemies on fire - always a classic!

9. How many missions does the game feature?

Lockdown has 16 single player campaign missions, all playable in lone rush and terrorist hunt mode as well as co-op campaign and terrorist hunt modes. In addition, PS2 has 9 exclusive multiplayer maps for adversarial, retrieval, and rivalry mode.

10. How many people can play online over PS2 online?

PS2 online mode supports up to 16 players.

11. Will the PC version differ from the console versions? If so, in which ways?

We're still in the process of hammering out the exact features, but some of the basics you can expect are much higher detail in our art – the environments and characters will not only get polygon and texture increases, but we're really expanding on the use of Havok as well as adding a ton of graphic features (specular, reflections, etc). We're also completely revamping each mission specifically for playing with a mouse and keyboard, so players will have more choices throughout the game.

12. Will there be different classes in the PC version?

We're not quiet ready to disclose features for the PC just yet. However, we're working hard to ensure the experience will be one Rainbow fans have learned to expect from Red Storm.
