Here are my thoughts on how to develop the most powerful character possible.
The first thing that one must understand is that a powerful character requires good stats and good equipment. This means that you shouldn't spend gold. Try to get by with what you can and minimize the loss of gold with buying equipment that you are just going to sell. If you can get a guardianship do it. Guardianship brings with it access to the best equipment and excellent default equipment. Guardian armor is all you need until you get your first uber.
At lower levels Warlic is your best friend. You can pick him up by doing the Keld Naer quest. Go to the map and go south. You will find Keld Naer in the upper right hand corner of the Southern Map. For Guardians, the Moggleets are also very good. They can freeze and burn. You can find the Moggleets by going to the map and sailing east once. Go to Stonerule which is on the bottom of the screen and click on the Moggleets to have them join you.
Now that you have your guests, it is time to find pets. One of the best pets you can get at low levels, if you want to train Cha or not is the lvl 10 nerfkitten. It may not attack all of the time, but when it does it can be very useful.
Did I mention that gold is very important? It is, so you should try to farm gold every time you can. If you can ballyhoo, then do it. If you are a guardian, then you should make about 10 Vince's Maze runs each day that you play. Don't burn yourself out on this, but do take advantage of it. Here' a you-tube of it if you don't know how to do it. I check the upper left corner first, but it is a good video:

Glave Shield->Water, Wind, Earth and Energy (upgrade to Gyrate at lvl 65)
Demonbreaker-> Darkness, Fire, Energy and Ice
Just use the Guardian Shield for Light.
At lvl 50 guardians could just pick up the Monster Claw and use it as your only shield until Nemesis.
Stats:
You should only train Three stats until you hit lvl 100. Stats work best when trained to high lvls and don't do much at all at lower levels. Warriors Train Str and Mage types train Int. Train Endurance until you have enough to survive comfortably. Endurance is the best defensive stat in the game. 100 End should be enough for anyone. The minimum by lvl 40 should be 50 End. The third stat should be either Luck or Dex for pure builds or Charisma for beast builds. Train your power stats first. This means Str or Int, as well as Cha for beast builds. Luck or Dex shouldn't be trained until Str or Int are nearly maxed out. You could wait until Str or Int is maxed out if you wish, then train your third stat. Once you get your stats near or above 150, you will find that they are very expensive. That's why it is important not to waste your gold.
Some Class armors are very useful. Probably the most powerful class armor is the Necro- Class armor. Undead Mutant is very powerful and only uses your weapon's stats for damage. It attacks Melee but doesn't use Str at all, so evey Mage types can use it effectively. As a matter of fact, Mage types use it best because it uses mana and mage types have more mana. They can use UM more often.
Beastmaster will find the Beastmaster class armor useful because you can use it to summon two guests that do great damage. Paladin's armor summons Daimyo, which is another excellent guest.
If you follow the advice I've given in this post, I think you will find that your character will be very successful getting to lvl 75. By the time you reach that level, you should have a good store of gold and ready to equip your character with the best armors, weapons and shields available. If you are a mage type, the same goes for expensive powerful spells.
I'm aware that this is far from complete. If you have suggestions on anything just post a reply. This initial post is just a starting point.
