I dont think you can (are supposed to) defeat him. After you lose to him you get to the quest.
Im confused about this "choose an armor thing". Is this the new thing? I kinda like the idea that classes are separated a bit but I dont quite understand it all yet.

One thing I dont understand is that on the ancient spirit armor. Even on the past lvl 5 attks that are melee the stat is int based. Is this right? I understand this is just a preliminary draft but Its a little to elaborate to be typoed so massivly wrong. Can anyone enlighten me?
