I've played Crisis Core and I've noticed the obvious message the plot has about dreams, freedom, being a hero and what these mean to different people. But what I haven't figured out is what exactly Crisis Core's plot is saying about dreams, freedom and being a hero. Throughout the game there is the abundant symbolism of wings (which Cissnei says represent freedom for those who have none, also in Loveless there is the line "pride is lost, wings stripped away, the end is neigh. Also note that Angeal, Genesis and Hollander all have different wings), the sky ( The wings let people into the sky, mako gave Zack sky blue eyes, and Zack notes that Midgar blocks out the sky from the slums) apples (the music Under the Apple Tree, how Angeal never stole the apples, Genesis brought an apple to Sephiroth before he turned on the people, and at the end Genesis eats apples with Zack) and the poem Loveless (about how three friends in the war, one was a prisoner, one dies and the other becomes a hero). Also Angeal's sword (which Angeal says represents his family's honor, he stops Zack from attacking Hollander with, gives to Zack when he dies and Zack gives to Cloud when he dies.)
I've put together that right before he died Angeal tells Zack that if you want to be a hero you have to have dreams, and honor. So Sephiroth wasn't a hero because he let Genova control him (and his dreams) and lost his honor when he turned on the people at Nibelheim.
Genesis wanted to be a hero, but what made him not one? What's the symbolism of apples? Anything else about what makes a person free? And any other comments about the symbolism or overall message of Crisis Core? Thanks for your replies.
