Analog Stick Problems

For the past week or so, my PSP analog stick has been completely misbehaving.

If I push the analog stick up in a game my character or cursor or whatever I'm controlling moves in the opposite direction. I can move without problems in almost any other direction, but trying to move forward just doesn't work.

Or, you could try the homebrew app Joysens. That's saved many joysticks.

Do I need custom firmware or something for this Joysense thing?

In the meantime I'll try that info screen thing. Info screen thing didn't fix the problem. I'm not sure if its a calibration problem or a physical one.

Yes, you do.

I am not sure how bad it is but the easiest way to fix it is to replace it. Since it is such an easy repair I recommend just replacing if your warranty is over. There could be a lot wrong with it. The analog sticks are a circuit board with an x and a y contact area on it. Basically creating a kind of flat rheostat. It shorts out a certain area where it touches and that lets it know where it is at. A simple scratch to the board could cause this kind of behavior or something more serious like a crack or a physical break in the stick itself.

As cheap and easy as the repair is he may as well go ahead for it.

There actually really isn't any danger opening your psp. I have repaired literally about 50 psp's. Some I have had to pull every single out of it and rebuild it, and I have never had a problem. The only thing you really have to watch out for is the same stuff you have to watch out for working on a computer or laptop. The biggest problem being static discharge which is easily countered by simply touching a piece of metal first. No wires are actually soldered it is all ribbon cables, you simply flip the release and the cable pops right out, and everything is held together with screw's also extremely easy to take apart. There really is no danger.

To say there's no danger is downright naive. Not everyone is experienced with the internals of computers and laptops. Proof is our good old Luigi Panache, who successfully opened his PSP 6 times then accidentally broke it on the 7th. I've got another friend who tried it recently, he bent the motherboard. He did have experience taking apart computers.

Again, taking your PSP apart isn't safe, unless you're a god.

In all honesty that's like saying since cars crash no one should ever drive one.

No Idea where you live but where I live if you are 18 you simply go pick up your license after a written test with questions like "at a stop sign you do what?".

A better analogy I guess should be the internet has viruses which can destroy computers so no one should ever use it because even with software you are never safe.
