My apologies for re-asking what I'm sure is a commonly asked simple question. I ask only to be clear and out of caution:

I got my PSP-3000 for Christmas this year and hastily updated to the very latest firmware, 6.x or something. The firmware methods mention that a lower version is needed, and a quick stroll over the past few pages indicates that I might be SOL for my lofty endeavour of running Mame on my PSP. Is this so? I don't want to risk bricking my PSP with overly risky methods.

It really depends on how the battery was made if you can soft-mod it into a Pandora. If it's a semi-cheap fake, chances are it might have the EEPROM chip you need to make the battery a Pandora. If it's a super-cheap fake, it most certainly won't have a EEPROM chip. I say you should try using homebrew software to Pandorize the battery. If it works, great! You've got a working Pandora. If it doesn't work, or the program crashes when reading/writing the battery's EEPROM, then you've got an unmoddable battery.
I do not recommend hard modding in this case. We can't know what the internals of that battery are, or where anything is spaced because it's not Sony. If it were dramatically different, it might be easier to puncture the foil casing of the battery (rendering the battery forever useless and possibly creating a chemical hazard if not properly disposed of.)
