PM Ville_Valo (moderator) and I'm sure he'll add it if it's good. Why PM him, you may ask? Simple. I won't be around. Now ain't that sad. NOTE : This thread contains several parts including the awesome downgrading guides that are excerpts out of the "All You Need To Know : Homebrew Guide". Credit to those should go to monkey_ninjas316. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do that kind of a good job, so I figured I'd leave it alone. On to the show... DISCLAIMER : You are doing this at your own risk. This procedure may have a very small risk of bricking your PSP just like any other update. By following these instructions, you agree to the fact that If your PSP is bricked by any chance, I will not be held responsible. What is Homebrew? Homebrew is user made PSP games and Applications that can be ran on your PSP. Homebrew is not Officially supported by Sony, but homebrew will give you more options to do with your PSP then the official Sony firmwares could ever give out. What can Homebrew do that I can't already? Tons of things! Homebrew opens new possibilities and functions for your PSP, most of which Sony can never bring you. These programs can be as simple, like using your PSP as a Universal Remote control, or even more complicated like controlling your PC with your PSP via WiFi. Stream Music, videos, pictures and homebrew games to your PSP through WiFi, Set up a calender, play any MP3 while you play any game and EVEN MORE! The possibilities are literally endless. Which firmware do I need to run homebrew on my PSP? All firmwares can use homebrew. But certain firmwares have it pretty easy to get. To check what firmware your PSP is... 1. Turn on your PSP 2. Go to Settings>System Settings>System Information 3. Your "System Software:X.XX" is your firmware. Newer firmwares require you to have a Pandora's Battery with you to install homebrew. But some older firmwares can be given homebrew by downgrading to 1.50 using an exploit in the firmware itself. List of firmwares that can be used to install homebrew without a Pandora's Battery :
Important : I have heard that the new PSP-2000 model (TA-088) cannot use Pandora at all. Can someone please check this?) Downgrading a PSP with 3.50 or lower firmware : Nowadays, it's pretty hard to find a PSP with a firmware like 3.50 or lower. Unless the owner is using homebrew or they don't have internet access AND haven't bought any new games, then they will obviously have updated it beyond that. However, if you do get your hands on an old PSP and want to downgrade it, you would need to know how. NOTE : The following section is fot Phat PSPs only! re: The Ultimate Homebrew Thread ;)

Now, onto the next part. This part is for Slim PSP users or those unlucky Phat users who upgraded their PSPs to a FW above 3.50. I already have a seperate guide for this, but I figured I might as well include the guide here so anyone can get much information as possible from this thread itself. A quick bit of information : What is a Pandora's Battery? A Pandora's Battery is a special battery that can be used to switch the PSP into Service Mode which can be used to unbrick any PSP or install homebrew on any PSP. A normal battery can be made into a Pandora either by software modification or hardware modification. Creating a Pandora's Battery using a CFW installed PSP. Items required :
Model TA-085 : First generation slim PSP. Can make a Pandora's Battery. Model TA-085v2 : Second generation slim PSP. CANNOT make a Pandora's Battery. Creating the battery : Run the Pandora's Battery app. NOTE : The app provided in this guide is for the 3.xx kernel, so that it would work on slims. It will NOT work from the GAME150 folder of a phat. If it doesn't work from GAME folder as well on a phat, set the recovery menu kernel setting to 3.xx kernel. Select the option to backup the EEPROM. If the app quits afterwards, start it again. Select the option to convert the battery to Service Mode. Congratulations. You are now in possession of a Pandora's Battery. Guide to converting a Pandora's Battery back to a normal one. Take off battery. Connect AC adapter and turn on PSP. Now insert Pandora's battery while PSP is on. Run the Pandora's battery tool from the DCv8 MS. If you backed up the EEPROM first, select the option to restore it. Otherwise, select the option to convert battery to Normal Mode. Done. NOTE : If you turn off the PSP now, you won't be able to turn it back on with this battery. You will need another battery to turn it on. If you don't have another battery, take out this battery and plug in the AC adapter. Now turn on the PSP. Creating the Despertar del Cementerio Memory Stick using a CFW installed PSP : Items required :
Rename the update EBOOTs to 500.PBP and 150.PBP respectively and copy them to the Memory Stick root. Open the 25335_dc8.zip archive. Copy the folder DC8 to MemoryStick:/PSP/GAME folder. Now run the DCv8 installer from the PSP's menu. It'll ask you to choose a button to use to boot it up, use UP on the d-pad. Hold UP for a few seconds until it's recognised. It should place the folders kd and registry and the file msipl.bin in the MS. Once it is done, you can safely delete 150.PBP. NOTE : 500.PBP MUST remain. Next, open up the timemachine_0.1.rar archive. Copy the TIMEMACHINE folder to MemoryStick:/PSP/GAME folder. Run the Time Machine installer and select install IPLloader to MS. Then, quit the app. This should place the folder TM in your Memory Stick. Bravo! Now you have a Despertar del Cementerio Memory Stick in your hands. "MS Creation by PC" guide (Use this method if you can't find a PSP with CFW. Note that you'll have to buy a Pandora's Battery or use an existing one, as the Battery cannot be created with the PC.) Items needed :
NOTE : The MS will be formatted during this process unlike creating the MS with CFW. Be sure to backup all your files before continuing. Open the Pandora_IPL.rar archive and extract all 3 files to the root of your drive C:\. (Any path can be used, but to avoid unnecessary difficulties, we'll use C:\. Connect Memory Stick to PC. (Use a PSP or Memory Stick reader. Even a Sony Ericsson phone would do.) Now open the command prompt. (Start -> Run -> CMD.EXE -> OK.) Now type C:\mspformat.exe <drive letter of the Memory Stick> and press Enter. (Example : If your MS drive is L:\, then enter C:\mspformat.exe L) At the warning, type Y and press Enter. You should get a message like "Drive formatted. Partition moved." Now type C:\msinst.exe <drive letter of the Memory Stick> C:\msipl.bin and press Enter. (Example : If your MS drive is L:\, then enter C:\msinst.exe L C:\msipl.bin) You should get a message asking whether to write the IPL. Type Y and press Enter. You should see the "WRITE MS BOOT CODE" message. Now disconnect USB and take out the MS from PSP or other device. Then reinsert it and reconnect USB. Next, open the 25335_dc8.zip. Copy the folders in it to the root of your MS. Rename the 5.00 EBOOT to 500.PBP and copy that to the MS root as well. Done. Installing CFW (Yay! Turn off PSP completely. Insert the DCv8 Memory Stick. Now hold UP on the D-Pad and insert the Pandora's Battery (assuming you designated UP as your boot button when using the DCv8 installer). Keep holding the UP button until the PSP boots into the Pandora menu. (If you used the "Creating MS by PC" method, you don't need to hold D-Pad UP.) [NOTE : This Pandora's Battery can be anything. It doesn't have to be actually made by the above method. You can even use a Pandora's Battery that you had before or even bought from somewhere. All Pandora's Batteries are the same.] Now press X to install 5.00 M33. BINGO! Note on PSN games : quote Dark_AleXHave fun! So, I guess that's it for the Pandora section. NOTE : From here onwards in the guide, you may come across unfamiliar terms. If so, please refer to Entropy's glossary. (Link at the top post.) Recovery Menu One of the main features of any Custom Firmware is the Recovery Menu. It gives access to many hidden features of the PSP like increasing/decreasing CPU speed. (That's a pretty handy feature, trust me. I got like 2 1/2 hours of music with 16% battery thanks to that. How do I access the Recovery Menu? Simple. Turn off the PSP completely. (Hold the Power switch up until the green light stops blinking and the screen powers down.) Now hold the R-trigger and turn on the PSP. Keep holding it until you have entered the Recovery Menu. Recovery Menu Options : Toggle USB : Pretty self explanatory, huh? In short, it's just like the Settings -> USB Connection, but better. Better as in, you can use it like an MS reader. Let's say you have a corrupt MS that the PSP doesn't detect. You need to format it with a PC. If you insert the MS and connect to the PC from here, you can easily achieve your goal. Group : Configuration : Skip Sony logo : Skips the SCE sequence and the PSP directly boots into the XMB. Hide corrupt icons : Hides any "Corrupted Data" icons in the XMB. Game folder homebrew : Phat PSP with 1.5 kernel only. (1.5 kernel will be explained later.) Allows you to switch the kernel of the GAME folder to 1.5 to allow old 1.5 homebrew to be run from it. Autorun program at /PSP/GAME/BOOT/EBOOT.PBP : Allows you to run an application automatically at boot. UMD Mode : Let's you select a No-UMD mode that will allow you to play ISO games without a UMD disc inserted. Fake region : Allows you to make the PSP think that it is of a different region than it really is. I frankly don't see much use to it, other than getting region based features like Go!Messenger. Free UMD region : Looks obvious, huh? Wrong! I really don't know why this option is here. People may think it lets you watch region coded UMD movies on any PSP, but sadly it doesn't work that way. Believe me, I tried. Hard Reset on homebrew : When enabled, resets the PSP when switching to 1.5 kernel for homebrew. Use VshMenu : Enables you to get access to a menu that lets you change CPU speed, Toggle USB (UMD, f0, f1, f2, f3, MS), load movie/audio ISOs and reset the PSP by pressing SELECT (3.71 M33 or higher) or HOME (3.52 M33 or 3.60 M33) button in the XMB. XMB USB Device : Lets you switch the medium that the USB Connection option in Settings connects you to, between UMD, f0, f1, f2, f3 or MS. Use M33 network update : Enable this option to easily update your Custom Firmware using the Network Update option in Settings. Hide PIC0.PNG and PIC1.PNG in game menu : Enable this option to stop loading background pics of items in the GAME -> Memory Stick menu. Advantage = Faster scrolling. End Group : Configuration Run program at /PSP/GAME/RECOVERY/EBOOT.PBP : Let's you run a CFW installer in case you have a semibrick and cannot boot up the XMB. (This was the main purpose of the Recovery Menu at first. Hence the name "Recovery" menu.) Group : Advanced : Group : Advanced configuration : Plain modules in UMD/ISO : Allows loading of certain plugins. It's safe to keep this option enabled. Execute BOOT.BIN in UMD/ISO : Any PSP game (UMD or ISO) consists of two executable BIN files. Those are BOOT.BIN and EBOOT.BIN. Now, don't ask me what their differences are, coz I have no idea. End Group : Advanced configuration Toggle USB (flash0) : Gives you full access to the flash0 partition (System partition) of the PSP's NAND via USB. Be very careful as you may get a brick by messing up this. Toggle USB (flash1) : Gives you full access to the flash1 partition (Settings partition) of the PSP's NAND via USB. Messing this partition up will cause a settings corruption. Toggle USB (flash2) : Gives you full access to the flash2 partition of the PSP's NAND via USB. Toggle USB (flash3) : Gives you full access to the flash3 partition of the PSP's NAND via USB. Format flash1 and reset settings : In case of a settings corruption, select this option. It'll allow you to set everything up from the beginning. (Kinda a pain in the butt, huh? End Group : Advanced Mod Edit: Jul 15, 09 by Ville_Valo -------------------

re: The Ultimate Homebrew Thread ;)

Recovery Menu Continued Group : CPU Speed : Speed in XMB : Let's you set the speed at which the processor works when the PSP is in XMB mode. I recommend you to keep this at "Default". Speed in UMB/ISO : Let's you set the speed at which the processor works when the PSP is in GAME mode. I recommend you to set this to 333 for maximum performance and lesser load times. But keep in mind that this will drain the battery a bit faster. End Group : CPU Speed Group : Plugins : Allows you to enable or disable any plugins that you may have installed. Plugins will be explained in a later part. End Group : Plugins Group : Registry Hacks : Button assign : Let's you switch between X and O as the main button of your PSP. Activate WMA : Enables the WMA codec without a WiFi internet connection. Activate Flash Player : Phat PSP only. Slim PSP has this feature already activated. Enables the Flash plugin of the Web Browser without a WiFi internet connection. End Group : Registry Hacks Exit : Saves changes and exits to the XMB. So, that's it for the Recovery menu section. Now that you know how to install homebrew and to use the Recovery Menu, let's look at how you can upgrade your Custom Firmware. Upgrading your current CFW Method 1 : (Only applicable if you have a WiFi internet connection and/or your current CFW is 3.80 M33-4 or higher.) 1. Hold R during boot to enter the Recovery Menu. 2. Go to Configuration. 3. Enable M33 Network Update. 4. Exit Recovery Menu. 5. Go to Settings -> Network Update. 6. Connect your WiFi connection and sit back and relax as your update is downloaded and then installed. Method 2 : (Use if you don't have a WiFi internet connection or you have a lower CFW version.) Important! : If your PSP is a hard-modded TA-082/6 at 3.52 M33-4 or lower, please use Chilly Willy's idStorage Manager to rewrite any missing keys to avoid a full brick and make sure to keep a Pandora's Battery and Magic Memory Stick ready anyway. Rewriting idStorage keys is an extremely complicated procedure that is best left to people who are sure of what they're doing. I will not try to explain that procedure here as even I have done it only once when a friend of mine bricked his hard-modded TA-082 when trying to install 3.71 M33. Now that you've read my rambling, let's get on with it. 1. Download the latest version of Dark_Alex's Custom Firmware (as of today, 5th December 2008, version 5.00 M33-3) from here. 3. Now find the official Firmware of the same version here, and download it. (In this case, 5.00.) 4. Rename the EBOOT.PBP of the X.XX Sony FW to XXX.PBP. (In this case, EBOOT.PBP to 500.PBP.) As it's firmware 5.00, we name it 500.pbp. If it were 4.01, we'd name it 401.pbp. 5. Place that in the same folder as the CFW installer and copy that folder to /PSP/GAME. 6. For good measure, visit the Recovery Menu and make sure that the Game Folder Homebrew kernel is NOT set to 1.5. 7. Go to GAME -> Memory Stick menu and select the installer. 8. Voila! Enjoy the new CFW. *Yawn* G'night people. I guess I'll continue this tomorrow. Mod Edit: Dec 04, 08 by Ville_Valo -------------------

re: The Ultimate Homebrew Thread ;)

Installing and using homebrew There are 4 types of homebrew applications:
Also known as K-Xploited homebrew, this format of homebrew uses two EBOOT.PBP files in two folders. The two folders are either named %___SCE___<appname> and ___SCE___<appname> or <appname>% and <appname>. The EBOOT.PBP file in the % folder is a dummy file that is used to load the proper EBOOT.PBP in the other folder, bypassing the anti-homebrew security check in FW 1.5. NOTE : Using the %___SCE___<appname> and ___SCE___<appname> naming format prevents one folder from being detected as "Corrupted Data" even if the "Hide Corrupted Icons" setting in Recovery Menu is disabled. This format of homebrew will only work on either Firmware 1.5 or any Custom Firmware. Using 1.5 kernel homebrew in FW 1.5: 1. Copy the two folders to /PSP/GAME. 2. Go to GAME -> Memory Stick and select your app. Using 1.5 kernel homebrew in 3.52 M33-4 or lower: 1. Copy the two folders to /PSP/GAME and set "Game folder homebrew" setting in the Recovery Menu to 1.50, OR copy the two folders to /PSP/GAME150. 2. Go to GAME -> Memory Stick and select your app. Using 1.5 kernel homebrew in 3.71 M33 or higher in a Phat PSP. quote StarJet1. Copy the two folders to /PSP/GAME and set "Game folder homebrew" setting in the Recovery Menu to 1.50, OR copy the two folders to /PSP/GAME150. 2. Go to GAME -> Memory Stick and select your app. Using 1.5 kernel homebrew in 3.60 M33 or higher in a Slim PSP. Important! A Slim PSP does NOT support 1.5 kernel homebrew. Thus, it is required that you use DAX's Time Machine to install the 1.50/3.40 hybrid firmware on your Memory Stick and run your 1.5 homebrew from there. Read the readme file to learn how to install 1.50/3.40 hybrid. (I don't think I have time for an in-depth Time Machine guide. To be continued... Mod Edit: Nov 14, 08 by Ville_Valo -------------------

Quick note:
Could you bold the bit that says 'This is for phats only'? It's very important that people don't start Ooh, and could you include a quick section about using the screenshot.prx plugin? That gets requested so much. I know this one works, I use it. So you can include that link rather than having to find a good one. Edit: Aug 11, 08 -------------------

Do you mind if I edit this? I might add a bit at the start eventually, with those links that take you down the page to the section you're after. I won't change anything major. I may also add something or reword something if I get people complaining they don't understand. If that's okay. -------------------
