I should be getting a new set of golf clubs later on this week. I'm pumped! Nice one, a set of irons or everything?

Read that some 16-year old lad who was US Junior Amateur Champion finished tied 17th in the Byron Nelson there and another player the same age finished in a similar position on the Nationwide Tour. Then Day won that event aged 22.
That's with Mannesaro finishing in the top 20 at the British Open aged 16 and now plying his trade on the European Tour well at 17. Ishikawa hitting 58 in Japan and winning five or six events already on the Japanese Tour and he's only 18. Rory McIlroy is only 20 and he's already in the top 10 in the world and won big events on both major tours. Then there's Rickie Fowler, Noh, Danny Lee etc. Exciting times for golf ahead.

re: PGA | Golf

Surprised no-one commented on Woods's 30 in the back nine yesterday since I know how much Americans love their epic Tiger moments in majors. That was probably the best I've seen him play in a few years, top stuff.
Hope either Johnson or McDowell wins today, McDowell because he comes from not to far away from me and Dustin Johnson because I'll win a decent sum of money if he holds out. He's played flawless stuff so far, he should win but it's excellently poised with Els, Mickelson and Woods waiting if he falters.

Don't really care at this stage. Only lost out on €2 albeit at good odds on Johnson, he royally blew up. An Irish major win comes before money. McDowell won. *bleep*ing ecstatic...get in my son! Edit: Jun 20, 10

Ireland gets revenge on France. Great win, I've seen McDowell up close quite a few times, class player. Comes from only about an hours drive away from me and I've played his home course. The greens were shite at Pebble today though.

They're pretty rubbish scores tbh, 68 for 9 holes? He sounds like a con-man, even if he has flaws in his swing, a general feel for the game of golf would mean that he should never do worse than 50 shots. quote Blue Moon
Ahem... I think you'll find McDowell is ours Mycon.. no revenge for you southeners Really happy with that win not just cause I bet on him but it's great to see any of my ( ) countrymen do well in anything I play golf for my club against Ulster teams in Ulster competition. It doesn't seem right not to call him one of my own, I'd feel more affinity to him than Harrington. It's for Ulster then. Plus Irish golf is done like rugby, they do the united Ireland concept to amateur competitions.

I know. Sounds much better than me anyway, I was beaten by some wee fella in a match at Warrenpoint, his father installed a putting green in his back garden, there are some that take it really seriously. I'm a long, long way off All Ireland level anyway or even being the best in my age at my own club.

re: PGA | Golf

What a final round that was. Johnson was absolutely ripped off, two shot penalty robbing him of a play-off for grounding his club in the bunker when his ball landed in the crowd. Somehow it was a bunker even though it looked like a path and the crowd were standing there. Feel very sorry for the guy, golf rules are stupid sometimes.
but fairplay to Kaymer good to see another European win. Wanted McIlroy to win but I'm sure he'll win a major very soon.

To be honest, Woods has been better than Mickelson in the past six months. But Mickelson has had all those family problems so it's to be expected.
Westwood's well ahead of them both at the minute.

re: PGA | Golf

Masters is set up brilliant for the weekend with Woods in a perfect position at -7, the two young guns McIlroy and Day leading and lots of established good players lurking behind like Westwood. Should be fun to watch.
I especially enjoyed watching the McIlroy/Fowler/Day grouping, they kept bombing it 320+ yards down the fairway then sticking it right at the flags. McIlroy tee to green has been just phenomenal, if putted as well as say Woods he could be -15 by now.
Woods is ominous, he was in the zone at the end of that round which was cool to watch.

That was an epic final round, around 10 players could have won. Would have won 42 euro if Day had've won and he had an amazing finish. Such good clutch play, his day will come. Schwartzel is just a class act, happy to see him win. So many players did their absolute best to win it, including Tiger. One of the best days of golf I've ever seen. Poor Rory.

Wish Tiger had got that eagle putt, he'd have breezed it I think had that gone in. Rory's collapse was just brutal.
Don't think so, he was too far back and there were too many players. I doubt that he would have got to -14 or even -12. What I loved about that was for a while it seemed like someone new would win it every 30 seconds. In-running betting would have been mental.

if he would have made the eagle putt, he would have been in the lead. That also would have got him in a rhythm. Really wanted to see him win, but that was a great tournament nonetheless. I do feel sorry for Rory though, what a horrible hole that was, not seen a triple bogey for a long time from a top player like that.
Too hypothetical, he had 3 holes left and had 16 to birdie which he also missed the putt in. At the end of the day he finished 4 behind so I don't think that he would have won anyway. -5 was too far to come back in one round, even if he had've posted -12 I'd say he would've been passed. Tabloids today have just said 'Rory's collapse' not even mentioning the other golfers that played well. To be fair to McIlroy, Watney and Johnson did the exact same thing last year in the final rounds at Pebble Beach and Whistling Straits. They both completely blew the final round too and Watney has gone on this year to win WGC. Johnson was robbed of the PGA Championship in that same year. It's incredibly difficult to hold on in majors for inexperienced players because of the enormity of the mental strain. Unless you're Woods, who is practically a robot when it comes to feeling pressure. He'll do better next time.

re: PGA | Golf

quote Jesh
It's funny, I don't like McIlroy because he's one of the young guys who came out right after the scandal and told the media that Tiger is beatable, so I enjoyed watching the collapse even though it hurt me as a golfer whose been through that.
And mycon, you could tell if you've watched Woods before that putt on 15 was the turning point. He walked up to the green with, "This tournament is mine" game face, and walked off with, " I just blew my shot". More than likely if he had made that momentum would've let the greatest golfer the world has ever seen birdie the last three holes to at least tie Schwartzel at -14. And that's not even adding in the "ohshi- he's back" factor it would've had on the golfers coming in, if Tiger took the lead to the clubhouse at -14 under, believe me no one is gonna catch him.
Too hypothetical. The world doesn't work in maybes, you're making up a whole situation here. Birdieing the last three holes? Good luck with that, Woods doesn't even have a good record on the last two holes over the years. That's incredibly hard to do, you're talking as if Tiger can do what he wants. Tiger has been in more or less the same position for the past five or six years in the Masters. Did Zach Johnson, Cabrera, Michael Campbell, Rich Beem and the many players competing with Tiger over the years in majors stop playing because Woods was a shot behind them? No they didn't, the world doesn't revolve around Tiger and you're simply overrating his effect. Sure it would add a bit of pressure but he's not superman, especially now where he hasn't won a tournament since 2009 and has lost some of his aura. And McIlroy said that Tiger was beatable at the moment after he'd been +18 in a tournament. Which part of that statement is not the truth? Get your facts right. Woods is beatable and has been beaten. He's been beaten by Graeme McDowell, YE Yang, Phil Mickelson in the past few years when he should have beaten them. He is beatable, it's clueless to think otherwise. Brilliant golfer yes. Machine no.

re: PGA | Golf

If he got that putt he had an outside chance I agree. But he nearly holed his tee-shot on the next hole, so I don't think it disturbed his belief that much. He was just too far behind on this occasion, I feel. People do suck up to Woods to an amazing extent. I can understand that he's the best golfer of his generation but I've found him to be a bit of a dry-arse in recent years especially and not very likeable with his on-course behaviour, his arrogance and his general interviews with the media where he comes across as some sort of robot. His form is not what it was and will probably never reach the heights it once did. It'd be great to see him play like he did in 2000 but that's just not realistic anymore. quote Jesh

re: PGA | Golf

Well McIlroy himself was putting ridiculously bad the entire week. I think there was some stat that he had something like 20 putts more than Luke Donald all week. Even with that mess up at 10 with the drive, there was no-one playing like him tee to green for the entire week. But his putting was desperate. Same story this week as well. Putting cost him in the Malaysian Open. Needs to sort it out or he'll be another Garcia. As you mentioned with Adam Scott, maybe he should go for the long putter. For younger golfers it's seen as a bit of a cop out but Scott has shown that it can been useful for those struggling with putting. quote Jesh
You're right I'm a Tiger fanboy, he's the reason we are seeing the young charge we are right now, and McIlroy should be respectful too at least until he proves himself.
He didn't seriously disrespect him though, it was a mixture of sensationalist journalism and circumstances. If you knew Rory McIlroy you'd know that he idolises Woods and respects him. It's funny that he can say one comment out of context and it goes against 40-50 others of complete modesty and respect. Your fact is wrong because you said 'straight after the scandal'. It was a year later. You said that he said he was beatable. He was/is beatable. And his words were taken from an entire interview where he said 'I wouldn't mind playing him at the minute' after Woods had played a tournament in +18. Which was the truth at that time. He also never came out and slagged Woods. He has a lot of class which you don't seem to know about and something you're basing off anti-European US crummy golf journalism. They're just annoyed that they have no major champions at the minute.

Umm...the entire U.S. golf coverage isn't that bad, it's actual just a lot of the coverage, I'll agree with that. And I guess I don't know much about McIlroy, it just bothers me when young golfers don't show Tiger respect, he's clearly one of the better golfers of our generation, ( I don't wanna say best since who knows what the young guys now can do ) but yeah, he's the reason a lot of these guys got into golf.
Poulter's a bit of a prick alright of the Europeans(said it would just be him and Tiger when he got going). But Rory has real class and modesty, I've seen hundreds of other sly comments from American fans unfairly tarnishing him as disrespectful based on one out of context, completely harmless comment which didn't even have any real significance at all. It suggests that you're simply misinformed and coming to conclusions with no real backing behind them. That annoys me.

Very happy for Choi, genuine nice guy and he's always in contention in bigger tournaments so I'm happy to see him win. Why did Toms go for that shot at 16? Bail out left, get your birdie and you pretty much can't be beaten. Ended up with bogey and lost in the play-off. He got to the play-off with a brilliant birdie but should have had it wrapped up by then.
Don't think McDowell bottled it or anything, too strong mentally for that, just his swing seems to still have some flaws in there that need to be ironed out. Way too many pulls and there's a lot of trouble at Sawgrass. Still though, should learn from this setback because that's probably the first time that he's messed up when he had the lead in the past year where he has messed it up.

Would be about time for Donald to win it, he has to at least be in contention I'd say. Watch out for Manassero, only 18 and is one of the form players in the world at the minute. Definite next star, bit of Ballesteros about him. Hopefully McIlroy puts in a solid show after the Masters.
Pity about Tiger, but if I was a fan I'd be worried about that knee, way too much trouble with it and I'd say that his appearances are going to be limited from now on, never mind his wins. Won't dominate ever again but it would be terrible to see his knee cost him of the chance to beat the major record.

Johnson has a good ball flight for it and nearly won two majors last year so I thought he might have a good week. Also got Quiros and an Australian winner as two bets so hopefully they'll cover me if an Irish player doesn't win. McIlroy is insanely good tbh, almost too good putting pressure on himself again, he's into the spotlight. If he sorts out the nerves he's like Tiger was in the quality of his ball striking. Hope he does himself justice in the next few days, despite shooting -6 in a US Open he hasn't proved anything yet that we don't know, the next three days will make the difference. Schwartzel looks like a danger man again. EDIT: How good is McIlroy? He could get so far ahead that he won't feel so much pressure. I thought I'd never see a performance like Woods at the US Open in 2000 but he's been even better these past 2 days. C'mon Rory keep it going. Edit: Jun 17, 11

Kuchar could be a dangerman, just so consistent he always seems to go under par and if he put in 2 68s at the weekend then it puts a fair bit of pressure on. I'd be very surprised if McIlroy finishes the tournament in double figures, the USGA can make their courses into brutes.

Yeah, love to watch Day, he's a brilliant holer out of putts, he seems to get so many long putts in a round when he needs it. Was the same in the Masters and will serve him well in future majors no doubt.
Still can't believe what McIlroy is doing here, this is supposed to be the US Open, the hardest major.

I don't think McIlroy will win the Open. There was no wind here all week, which meant that Rory got away with his stock right to left draw all week. Royal St. Georges is a beast of a test where the wind can really pick up. If it's 40 mph winds, I wouldn't fancy McIlroy.

re: PGA | Golf

Think I said that when he was at -13 before the end of the second round.
I think it is somewhat comparable because no-one should be able to shoot -16 in the US Open, it's still a difficult course, even if it's in ideal conditions. I don't think I've ever seen someone strike it so well over four days in a major.
However, having said that I would agree with you that Woods' one is probably better because of the conditions, because of the course(McDowell was level par winning at Pebble last year) and because of the control over his game and a 15 shot victory. That's probably the greatest of all-time.
But this is a also legendary performance for me that people will always remember. Considering that we never thought anyone would get anywhere close to that, Rory's gone and done the next best thing.

Pretty cool to see Holywood golf club(McIlroy's home club) on the news here and around the world. I was there only a month ago for an inter-club golf match, they have a number of Rory's achievements on the walls, including a card of his 61 in Portrush at 15 with a 28 on the back nine. They also have a nice practice area which I used that Rory funded. Unsurprisingly we lost but a nice place, decent folks.
They can be very proud of their man.

Yeah, he got in last minute when Singh pulled out through injury. Played like a man with a score to settle today, brilliant golf. Playing quite difficult, level par is a good score.

re: PGA | Golf

Nah haha! Annoying as hell, I've done him three times for majors and he's nearly won two and done nothing in the other, then leave him this week and he has a great chance. Only a matter of time though, he's a great player. His length off the tee works well in the wind. Fowler had a superb 68 today in the worst conditions, he outplayed McIlroy in the wind. Should be interesting to watch tomorrow. How do you not know Clarke. Legendary Irish player, beat Tiger in his peak in 2000 in the World Matchplay. He's won two World Golf Championships and been a top Irish player for as long as I remember but hasn't done it in majors since he finished 2nd in the 1997 British Open which is a long time ago. He's always been a handy player on the links. He hasn't done a lot recently which is why you have probably never heard of him but he's had quite a stellar career without being able to win a major. Would love to see yet another Irish victory, that would be incredible. Gwan big Darren.

The USPGA Championship starts today.
It's Tiger Woods' first major since the Masters. Can he get back to his best?
I'd say to look out for the young brigade, McIlroy again has to be one of the favourites, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson should all make good runs at it.

Tiger had an absolute mare, have to say I laughed a bit after all the guys on PGATOUR.com hyped him up saying that he was going to win this week. Maybe a slow decline of a great, certainly mediocre at best at the minute but he has time on his hands to sort it out.
Some round by Stricker, it had to happen sometime the guy is just too consistent.

Quite an uninspiring group of leaders tbh, failing to enthrall me like the other majors this year so far. Hopefully a big name comes through the field with a succession of birdies and makes a serious challenge.

I understand what you mean but Kaymer/Schwartzel had won 5+ events on the European Tour and were around the top 5 European Tour players for a few years. They were always likely to win majors, some of the most highly rated young players.
These guys have come from nowhere but it was quite entertaining final round. Dufner should have won it by now. 15 and 18 are so difficult holes.

No I did watch it.
Let's not go too far now, the Masters this year was better excitement? Could have had about 10 winners, charge from Tiger, clutch birdies by Day on the last two beaten by clutch four birdies to finish for Schwartzel. Can't really get much better than that. Pity about Rory but a great major.
Next two were great personally because of Irish winners.
This one was sorta meh for me, decent entertainment at the end. Well done to Bradley.

Sorry there Chelskiman, I was and didn't see your comment. Good win for the States, Furyk back in form with 5 in 5 and that's the best Woods has played in a while. Swinging the club much better now, when he gets his consistency back he'll be back in major contention. Internationals seemed to lack strength in depth, Robert Allenby wasn't in form and was a strange enough pick and there were other cases of the internationals lacking depth.

Tiger is like a caged animal that almost has the keys in his grasp. There are sports headlines across the globe that are just dying to say.... "He's Back"
Not yet, but I predict at least one major this year!!!
A lot of people claimed he was back when he won the Chevron Invitational at the end of last year. Didn't feel he proved all that much there but it has to be said that he is more or less back, I don't know how 'back' people expect him to get to because I don't see him ever being dominant again. That doesn't mean he won't win majors, it would be a brave man to write him off at Augusta.

McIlroy has to be favourite I think. Woods winning Bay Hill for the seventh time shows he's back somewhat to form but it has become his tournament to win when he enters it, it doesn't tend to have a massive bearing on the season. Woods second favourite though.
Whoever is favourite, what a great tournament it promises to be. The most excited I have ever remembered going into a major. Rory's emergence, Woods and Mickelson's returns to form, the continued steadiness of Donald, some great young golfers around and can the likes of Westwood finally win a major? So many questions to be answered. Well played Tiger, easy money this week. About time I won some money on golf this year.
EDIT: No actually you're right, Woods moved into 7/2, McIlroy eased into 9/2. Suits me fine that.

If Westwood could putt he'd win so easily... After I posted about Harrington yesterday it just didn't get any better for him. To be fair I'd say after that he only missed one really makeable birdie but he really needed to start making a charge and nothing was going for him. It's a pity I really liked how he was playing yesterday, glad to see him back on form. Rory... I dunno McIlroy will be fine, just didn't happen for him at all this week. His preparation could do with altering (should play at least once in the three weeks before a major) and I guess he was hyped up a little too much but he's still 22 years of age, world no.2 and reigning US Open champion, there will be plenty more chances for him at the Masters.

Ha I didn't mean I was worried about his future or anything, I was just wondering what went wrong. Saturday morning he's in the perfect position to really put a proper challenge together and he completely collapses. Even a strong start on Sunday would've had him in there contending imo
Ah right, fair enough haha. Yeah, hard to know where it went wrong, just one of those days on Saturday. He didn't actually play that well for the first few days but scored great, then at the weekend he missed a number of putts on those tricky greens and his driving was off. A bit of a letdown really. Not hitting the ball as straight off the tee as he used to which is a concern.

He has admitted that he was trying to get it close but still an amazing putt. That's the only time Tiger won at Sawgrass so that is a poor record in comparison to other events considering how many times he's played. Can't see it really happening for him this week but you never know.

Fowler is letting his round go a bit, on the other hand Westwood is improving. But it is way too packed and can change in an instant. It is a hard one to call.
First 6 holes have played...426 over par and that was said about half an hour ago. Furyk is another guy who has the mentality to contend.

Adam Scott is playing beautiful golf. But come on Gmac for tomorrow. Would like to see Scott fulfil his potential though.
Woods is playing way too conservatively. If he loses he can partly blame his approach definitely. Irons off the tees at par 5s? Scott is putting it on in 2 and two putting par 5s. Woods is playing for pars. Over conservative golf.

I don't like how people are saying how he cheated and he got away scot free. He hasn't been disqualified but he has been penalised two strokes. If Rule 33 is there, he shouldn't be disqualified if the officials told him he was alright at the time.
Some people are adopting a holier than thou attitude on the situation, that this ruining the integrity of the sport. Admittedly I thought that he should have been disqualified but I wasn't aware that the Masters Committee actually said he was fine at the time, that wouldn't have been very fair either. There's a reason they brought in rule 33 in 2011.

Day has to win a major soon. That's 3 major 2nds and a 3rd and he's only 25. He has the temperament but he just needs things to go his way a little more.
Congrats to Rose, I wished I'd done him as a bet. He'd all the right stats for this course and a US Open, near the top of all the the driving and GIR stats but I just thought he didn't have it in him yet. He proved me wrong, great ball striking allowed him to get away with two three-putts on the back nine.
