"We played well"

What are your thoughts when you refer to your team in the first person? It's when you refer to your favorite team as if you were on the team or the team itself. Ex: "We did well against the Steelers but we could of done better"

It never sat right with me. It doesn't feel right to speak in 1st person because I'm not on the team or anything. I still do it sometimes but I try not to.

I've noticed it before, and I definitely see what you're getting at...but I've never really complained cause I catch myself doing it all the time.

It just feels odd to distance myself so much from a team I've been rooting for all my life to use the word "they". It'd feel odd to use the same term for some team I don't care about compared to some team I grew up watching. That's probably the main reason I use the word we.


I know what you're saying though. "We" seems kinda strong of a word, in that people just try and inject themselves into moments they had no influence over. Still, I don't get the feeling that people say "YEAH WE DID AWESOME" in a way that means they feel like they actually helped. I just see it as my team represents my city. While I don't live there anymore, it's still my city. That's why I say "we" at least.

Make sense? I don't know. I'm sure people use "we" way too strongly, but in my case, I just use it because anything else seems awkward.

I sort of use for the teams I'm a big fan of, like Penn State and the Steelers and the Pitt Panther basketball teams when I'm at games. But when I watch Pitt's football games, I don't really feel any connectivity to them, so I say they.

Your right badboi, I doubt they would. A lot of times you hear people talking about the atmosphere of stadiums, or in some cases, the fans being like a sixth man in basketball. Players often recognize that importance.
