Level up. Solo leveling is actually what won me that fight on my second run-through (on my first game, I didn't even find the catacombs until after I'd beaten Bahamut and found my way into Eureka, so I was seriously over-levelled).

Mid 30s probably won't win you the fight. Kill off most of your characters, and then take the one/two surviving ones to the dalg continent on the airship. Fly around and kill anyone you find for easy exp. If you run low on health, Doga's manor is right there for you to heal yourself/revive your other characters when you're done.

Also, if you have a high level thief, try using 'steal' on Odin when you fight him. If it works, you should end up with the weapon 'Gungir'. It's an uber-powerful spear for Dragoons.

I got it with level 74, so I can't confirm on any of that...

Why would the job level matter though?

I beat that dude without him even doing that watcha ma call it attack that wipes out your entire party. All my guys were lvl. 50 and i had a dragoon with it's job lvl. at 99 and had it equipped with two dragon lances. Have a really high lvl. thief steal that gungir from the guy, then equip it to your dragoon and try it out. Secondly, don't have a bard on your team. I beat Odin with a Viking, Dragoon, Devout, and Thief. If you don't have the last list of jobs, then try to beat him with a high lvl. Viking, Dragoon, White mage, and a Dark Knight. Just lvl. ur guys up to lvl. 45 and you should be fine with the jobs i recommended

Better items? So if I have a jlvl 5 thief steal something off a goblin, then have a lvl 99 thief steal something off of another Goblin, they'll each steal different items?

Sadly thats not the case. More often than not all 8 of the possible steal slots are the same item. Perhaps the higher level monsters. Most of the bosses seem to give hi-potions. Not that useful
