The Invention System

Now, I'm on disc two and, I would like to upgrade my weapons. I have Misty (obtained her without knowing xD), and I am told that she makes an item that upgrades weapons.

What I don't get about the invention system, is everything basically. How do you know what your inventing, and how do you go about synthing a weapon? I've read up on it, and looked in the thread index, but I still don't get how it works. Also, I don't get how the time/quality bars work.

Thanks in advance.

re: The Invention System

Weapon, if you don't mind, I'd like to turn your thread into a place for people to post any general questions they may have about the invention mini-game. (I've been seeing a lot of invention-related problems lately, and there's nowhere to ask them.)

  • Getting Started- In order to begin inventing, you need to purchase Lines (up to three) and at least one talent to be used at the workshop. To begin, you must enter any workshop and approach the main desk (or anyplace that looks like a main desk, usually with papers scattered across it). You'll automatically be prompted to invent, so select 'Yes' and the Invention menu will appear. Go to 'Expand Workshop Facilities' to purchase the necessary Lines and Talent Expansions you wish to have installed at your workshop. Once you've bought what you wanted, press the circle to go back and select 'Invent'.

  • Inventing- This screen will display all of the inventors you can use at that workshop. To start, select a character's picture and drag it to the first line you purchased. If you didn't buy a line, then you will not be able to invent any items. Next, select 'Type' and choose a talent you have purchased and want to use from the list. Make sure that the inventors you have chosen to participate have the best talent level for that particular talent type. When you've done that, under 'Plan' choose 'Original Invention' and the cost will appear. You can adjust the cost by tapping 'X' twice over an inventor's picture. At a lower cost, the chance of a successful invention is greater than it would be if it were more expensive. Only use a high cost for inventors with a high talent level, as this will ensure a greater success rate. When you're happy with the cost, press the square button to start the line.

Allow the line to run until you see the inventors become happy. This means that they've successfully created an item, so you may stop the line anytime. After a successful invention, you can continue the line to make more of that same item. You do not know what the item will be until you end the line yourself. Never allow the quality of the line to expire. If it does, then you will not be given any items for that line, despite any successful item creations that may have happened.

When you're finished, and you've made a new item, be sure to have it evaluated using your compact communicator so that your item will appear in stores later on. You can access your CC from the main menu. From there, go to 'File Patent' and you'll see a list of newly created items that have not been evaluated yet. If you haven't created anything new, then Welch will tell you.

  • Refining- When you're ready to invent and you want to improve an item that you already possess, select 'Specify Plan' instead of 'Original Invention'. You'll then be asked to select the item you want to have refined. Depending on the talent type you've already chosen on the line, you'll have different items relating to that talent available for you to refine.

Ex: You've chosen 'Alchemy', so when you select 'Specify Plan', go to 'Other Items' and you'll see a list of alchemy-related items in your possession that can be refined.

When you've chosen the item, the cost will appear and can be slightly adjusted by tapping 'X' twice on an inventors' picture that is on the line. Switching inventors of different talents on and off of the readied line will cancel the invention.

Press the square button to begin inventing.

Note: Usually if there is a successful invention done in 'Secify Plan', it will automatically stop the line. Normally, this will cost you 1 (talent) material. However, if the inventors' faces become happy and the line does not stop, it means that there are more than 1 possible refining outcomes. So basically, you'd only spend 1 (talent) material for more than one factor improvement.

  • Synthesizing- This works similarly to 'Specify Plan'. Make sure you've purchased a Line and a Synthesis expansion under 'Expand Worskop Facilities'. When you're ready, Select any one of your characters and place them on a line. Under 'Type', choose 'SYTH' and you'll be prompted to synthesize a weapon. Choose a weapon to be synthesized from the list and press 'X' to select the item to be synthesized into the weapon. This screen will also display the amount of remaining Synthesis Materials that you have. Each attempt at Synthesis will take at least 1 material.

Ex: Item to Synthesize: Metal Pipe
    Item to Be Synthesized: Orichalcum
    Item Required: Synthesis Materials: 15

Note: Like Specify Plan, you can also get freebies for synthesizing. If you synthesize refined items into a weapon, you could add more than one factor for the cost of 1 Synthesis Material, allowing you to synthesize using less materials.

Ex: If you were to refine an Orichalcum, it will have 2 factors of +500 attack. Synthesizing it to a weapon that has at least two empty factor slots on it will give you two separate +500 attack factors as if you had synthesized two normal Orichalcums.

I hope that covers your question, Weapon.

    Not a problem bro.

Yeah though, that basically answers my question, I'm going to try it out right now ^^.

How can you tell how many slots an item has though =O?

Weapons and armor only have 8 slots to synth extra factors on to, so there should be plenty of room to upgrade weapons and stuff.

I still dont get how to get money from this... do you just take the items you create and sell them...? or does money come to you automatically? Do the items cost more than you spend on them...?

There is no point to the ranking system. You don't win anything for being number 1...i guess its just there, and if you're really competitive you can try for number 1 and get some self pride or something, but other than that...it serves no other purpose.

IME, I've found that the best way to make money by inventing is to use Sophia, Misty and Ansala to make 20 Celestial Homunculus. It costs 9,000 Fol to make them using the Alchemy talent and they sell for a little over 20,000 Fol. With those particular inventors on the line along with the Alchemist's Stone to increase the success rate, you could easily make one Celestial Homonculus after the other w/o fail.

There are of course other ways to make money by inventing, but what I've said above is probably the best way to go about it.

Note: Everything you invent sells for more Fol than it costs to manufacture.

Orichalcum is a stone you make from alchemy and it has 2 factors on it: 1) survive on fury 50% 2) +500 attack. You can make this stone by using Misty Lear,Mackwell, and Maria Or just use Ansala,Misty Lear, and Mackwell. The base price is anything in the 5000's.

    re: The Invention System

Close Hayato. The base preice is anywhere in the lower 5000's. If you go to the high one, you make something compleatly different. I can't remember what it was I didn't find it very useful.

well thats what i used to make orichalcums and i'm pretty sure its 5000's but we can debate this all we want which would be beneath us, so lets just leave it as whatever. lol =)

hi, i don<t understand that part
"If you were to refine an Orichalcum, it will have 2 factors of +500 attack. Synthesizing it to a weapon that has at least two empty factor slots on it will give you two separate +500 attack factors as if you had synthesized two normal Orichalcums."
So i went to alchemist, put simple plant, pick my orichalum, and refine it. But i get 1 orichalum with a factor of 1 i think. Does that mean i got 2 orichalum?

    re: The Invention System

use the best people you have in Alchemy, and then make sure the price is around 5700... if you do that, then you can easily get Orichalum, and then you should keep upgrading it so the cost of Synthesizing wont be over 100k... to upgrade you just choose specify plan and then choose the Orichalum... When you see the characters smile, you press X and stop the inventing and get your results

Orichalum: +500 Damage - 50% of surviving off of Fury. and for each upgrade it is another +500 damage to the weapon you attach it to...

oh and you might want to get Ansala, if you have Eliza or Pepitta, use them, Sophia and Misty Lear... Make sure the price you set it to is 11-12 and then you start inventing... sound easy? well it's not... For me, it took me a few days of just letting them invent... but i finally got my Philosopher Stone, dont forget to get it rated... and then go to Aquaria, and where your guest room is, keep going north and at the last room on the left, give it to him and then you get Ansala, he has a 99 in Alchemy. he owns
