What the hell is that, you ask? Well, it's an error SMAC throws out regularly on newer machines, particularly those with Windows XP. One thing is for sure - in all cases I have seen, the CPU IS supported . Here are the instructions on how to get around this problem.
1. The first order of business is to download and install the Win XP compatibility patch, available right here at civ.org.pl.
http://www.civ.org.pl/downloads.php?lang=Eng&type=SMAC§ion=PatchDownload the patch even if you have another version of Windows than XP, it will work anyway.
2. If that doesn't work, quit the game and try the following (quote from the Firaxis website) :
"[...]If you are having trouble running Alpha Centauri on Windows XP, or you have a newer system with a 64 bit processor, try the following solution after installing the Windows XP patch.
Double click on My Computer
Double click on the C: Local Drive (your Hard Drive or the drive that the game is installed to)
Double click on the Program Files Folder
Double click on the Firaxis Games Folder
Double click on the Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Folder
Double click on the Alpha Centauri.ini File (The file looks like a read me text file with a little gold symbol on it).
Once the file is open in Notepad, change:
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0
to
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
[if there is no ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm line, add it to the file - LoD]
Be sure to save your changes, then run the game. You may still receive the error message. If it occurs, click OK and the game will load fine."
3. If you still can't get the game to run, check whether you've saved the changes in Alpha Centauri.ini. If yes, reboot.
4. If that doesn't help, try setting
ds3d=0
eax=0
in your Alpha Centauri.ini .
5. If you still can't run the game, go to the forums, and describe your problem.
Getting to step 5 is highly unlikely, as no one needed to go further than step 3 so far.
We hope this little guide will help you. Happy SMACing!
After that, it seemed to have fixed it for a second; I clicked OK, it went to a black screen and showed the hourglass (Rather than exiting out). After a few seconds it exited out and showed a "terranx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close..." etc.
Are there any steps After this I can do to possibly get this to worK? What's going ON? I'm running on an Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz, Windows XP...
Any help is greatly appreciated!
