Which one to get?

i would actually disagree on the part where the screen breaks. I think you should get a ds lite because, it has more features than an ordinary ds, (they lie about the battery life because, you can set the brightness of the screen so basically the more brightness you have on the screen equals to less battery life but it could run about 5 hours on max brightness)... altough you cannot play the 'nintendo ds browswer' on a ds lite. (its a internet for about 13.00 pounds). But the dsi has lots of featuers... So your answer to your 'q' is that you might as well buy the lite, but its actually your choice, try reading the reviews about them....

(the keypad on the lite is quite uncomformatable... i think its only on my lite... who knows?)

Definitely lite, much more shiny, less ugly.

I use the stick out part as a handle sometimes. It's kinda odd looking to have them stick out, but it's useful since you can flip the DS over and see the game without taking it out I guess.
