Flashing your Nintendo DS's firmware is completely legal, you always run the risks of changing the internal written code of you systems so read these instructions thoroughly! FlashME: flashing your Nintendo DS What Is It? FlashME is a firmware patch for the Nintendo DS hand-held system that allows you to execute files from your NDS Flashcart without the requirement of additional hardware like a passme or passkey. In the past you had to use a passme device injunction with your flashcart or adapter. Now, if you flash (write to it with the firmware patch) your DS firmware will be changed to allow the homebrew files to be played. In other words: FlashME is a .nds file that you can launch from your Nintendo DS so that your Nintendo DS will no longer require the passkey or passme device to execute homebrew files from your GBA cart. So if you're using a GBA cart to save your files, and an additional DS card to execute the files; you now no longer need to have that DS card to do so. Are There Risks Involved? Yes! Flashing anything, or making internal changes to the written firmware is dangerous. You oculd end up "killing" your Nintendo DS if the appropriate procedures aren't followed correctly (some of you may know this better as "bricking", rendering the DS unable to execute any games and have little use for more than an expensive paper wight). However, the only real threat proposed to you when following this procedure is having your DS battery die mid-way or you turning your DS off too early. To avoid this take into consideration preforming the below precautions:
(Flashing) The Process: Download FlashME: This version will only boot the slot-2 device into NDS mode if you hold "Select". This method will not remove the "Health Warning" boot message. This method will not remove the "Health Warning" boot message and will not autoboot a slot-2 device unless you hold "Select". This is a version of FlashMe v8 that has been patched with ndsloader.bin so it will work on SuperCards. (Use this download version ONLY with SuperCards!) Once you have FlashME downloaded put FlashME onto your flashcart the same way you would put any other game on, but make sure of two things: FlashME must be the only game/app on your flashcart when attempting to flash your Nintendo DS. If you are using a GBA flashcart that has a GUI, make sure it is disabled. FlashME must be loaded directly; a GUI would get in the way and FlashME would not be able to install. For FlashE to be able to fully install correctly, you will have to short the SL1. This means that you will need to take off the battery cover and remove the sticker over the SL1, as shown here: Next, remove the square pink sticker to the top left of the battery area. The hole you see in the above pic is where you will place your metal screwdriver, this connects the two SL1 pads located in the hole, thus allowing us to successfully flash the Nintendo DS's firmware. (If you don't have a small screwdriver available a toothpick with the tip wrapped in tin foil works just as well) Once you've got the screwdriver securely in place, make sure your battery is as well, flip your Nintendo DS over and execute the FlashME file you installed on your flashcart earlier. When you first start the program it will give you details concerning the flashing and a key-entry to enter. In this case press XBXB. Ignore the warning and push start if you've got everything in place up to this point. This message might not show up using FlashME v8, the program includes a fix for the DS Lite. After you entered the key you will see a number with a % symbol next to it. This means that you are currently attempting to flash your firmware If you can not get the progress of the percentage to move at all, it means that you are not connecting the two SL1 pads located in the hole that you have your screwdriver in. Just move it slightly around until the progress moves if need be. When it is complete, it will then tell you it is safe to turn off your DS. Upon turning your DS back on you should now have successfully installed FlashME! Say goodbye to using two carts to launch applications, and enjoy your new firmware! Note: FlashME can be uninstalled using the "fail-safe" feature that you were given with the first installation of FlashME. A DS game card is required to be in the DS card slot to run the executable from your GBA cart (not a pass me card etc); however it doesn't have to be a retail game. Recovery Mode: If malware ever hits your DS and damages your firmware, FlashME has a recovery feature that can save your DS. Unfortunately, this recovery mode can only be used if FlashME was already installed on your DS before the malware hit. Here's how to use the recovery mode: Put flashme.nds onto your slot-1 or slot-2 flashcart the same way you did before (no other files, menu disabled). Hold START+SELECT while you turn your DS on. The DS should now boot directly to GBA mode, where either flashme.nds will automatically run or you can launch it yourself, and reinstall it. Wi-FiME wirelessly download homebrew demo/applications onto your Nintendo DS A driver and application, created by Tim Schuerewegen, necessary to allow anyone with a Nintendo DS and a supported wireless network card to load any homebrew demo/app on their DS. You already had the ability to do this with a PassMe device, but now can do it wirelessly! In other words; you can now download homebrew demos and applications without the use of a wired (USB) connection straight to your flashcart (without PassMe) through the use of your wireless internet connection. Required Materials: Installation of Your NIC Driver: Extract your wireless network card driver (keep it somewhere where you'll quickly remember where it is). You will need this original network card driver if you wish to revert your wireless card back into a wireless network card! If you have a PCI card, turn off your computer and find an open slot for it. If you have a laptop, just find a slot and insert the card. Automatic Driver Installation: Once your "Found New Hardware Wizard" pops up (after inserting the wireless card); select "No" and click "Next". Choose "Install from a list or specific location" (Advanced) and click Next. (This is why you saved your driver to a location where you could access it) Make sure "Search for the best driver in these locations" is selected; click "Include this location" in the search and browse to the extracted driver, then click "Next". It should detect your card properly, if it has you should see it begin to install the driver. once it's done installing the driver click "Finish". Launching the Application: Extract the rt2560_app_wmb_1_4_beta_1 .zip file you downloaded, then double-click wmb.exe. At this point your DS should be off. Tap "DS Download Play", and allow your DS to search for software to download. You should see Wireless Multiboot "PassMe". Press the A button to select it. You will be prompted "Would you like to download this software?" Press the A button to select yes, and begin the download. You should see it downloading to your Nintendo DS if everything was done correctly, then you should see it begin being uploaded to your computer (via your wireless card and wireless network). Viola' now you're ready to download homebrew demos and applications wirelessly through the use of your Nintendo DS! Note: You're wireless card now only functions with your DS, if you want to revert and use it as a network wireless card again you'll need to switch back to the original driver for your wireless card (this is why we saved this somewhere accessible before beginning). Still to Come: DLDI and Patchwork Libfat Homebrew DevTOOLS+ Further Extensions... Feedback and suggestions are always welcome! By, Zephyr, (update v1.1.0 6-18-08') Edit: Jun 17, 08 | |
