	Not necessarily. 	Explanation to Eve B Hart: the first time you pull the sword (without succeeding) the sword / game will register your physique and health stats (not toughness) if you increase them by 5, you also get the sword so lets say you pull the sword without upgrading any strength stats! then you go to the guild and upgrade them both by 5 then when you pull the sword again, you will release it you can also indeed max out, to GARANTEE you succeed ------------------- quote Forrest Gump Life is like a box of chocolates. 	I've been playing this game a long time. I know how to get the sword in the stone. Toughness does have to be upgraded, by three levels.
