So summoner is bad?

Summoner is crap, because it means using Shaman path Ewan or Knoll. Mage path Ewan is superior, and Knoll just sucks.

Also, it's locked to Dark. Dark sucks, end of.

Skills? There's only a handful of them, most of which are pretty worthless. The ones worth anything would be:

Slayer - Bishop skill that causes more damage vs monsters. Really only matters vs Dracozombies.
Lockpick - Item usable only by thieves and assassins. Open locks.
Steal - Steal non-weapon items from enemies, providing your thief or rogue is faster than the target.
Pick - I think that's what it is called. Let's Rogues open locks without a lockpick.
Crit Boost - Swordmasters, Beserkers, Super Journeyman and Super Recruit all get +15 crit.
Dance - Refreshes an adjacent unit, allowing them to act again in the same turn.

Summon would be a good skill if it didn't involve being locked to dark and using Knoll or Ewan. The rest are pretty "meh". Pierce (Wyvern Knight skill) can actually freeze the game so best avoided.

Promoted thief. Picks locks without lockpicks, can steal and extended vision in fog. Tend to have lesser combat abilities than other unit types.

An for info i never ever used a valkrye in FE7.

FE7 Valkyries are mounted spellcasters that use anima magic and staves. Mage Knights of FE8 match that perfectly. FE8 Valkyries are also mounted spellcasters with staves but use light magic instead.

And is a Great knight good?

Pretty good. Weapon triangle control tends to put them over Paladins. Their effective mt weakness virtually doesn't matter because hardly any enemies use armour slaying weapons. They also benefit from better promotion bonuses.

Well, you now know Rogue and Mage Knight. Great Knights are mounted units with swords, axes and lances. 6 move and weakness to weapons effective vs horses and armour.

Wyvern Knights are locked to lances but get the Pierce skill (which can freeze the game due to a glitch). Otherwise similiar to Wyvern Lords.

Ranger is basically FE8's version of the Nomad Trooper.

Summoner's are spellcasters who use dark magic and staves and can summon phantoms. Phantoms disappear if they are hit but are good for distracting enemies. Probably better to have actual tanker units take on hits instead though and leave magic users with anima magic.

Priest is basically a male version of the cleric. Stave user, basically.

Journeyman is a "trainee" class locked to axes and with low bases but an extra 9 levels of stats to gain. Can promote to Fighter or Pirate. Once both routes have been cleared you can choose to remain a Journeyman and then promote to a "Super Journeyman", which gets a +15 crit boost. If you want a crit-getting axe user then a Beserker would be better.

Recruit is a "trainee" class locked to lances and with low bases but an extra 6 or 9 levels of stats to gain. Can promote to Knight or Cavalier. Once both routes have been cleared you can choose to remain a Recruit and then promote to a "Super Recruit", which gets a +15 crit boost. Great Knight tends to be more preferable for better weapon selections though and better stats. Amelia (the game's recruit) tends to join a bit late though so using her is difficult.

Pupil is a "trainee" class locked to anima and with low bases but an extra 9 levels of stats to gain. Can promote to Mage or Shaman. Once both routes have been cleared you can choose to remain a Pupil and then promote to a "Super Pupil", which gets access to all 3 offensive magics. Mage Knight tends to work better in Campaign, but Ewan (the game's pupil) tends to come really late and underlevelled.

There have also been some changes to existing classes.

Valkyrie you already know had the weapon changed to light.
Bishop's gained the Slayer skill.
Sage's gained light magic.
Druid's gained anima magic.
Paladins lost access to axes.
Generals gained swords.
There are 2 versions of the Great Lord class. One is locked to swords and the other to lances. Both are mounted.

There were also some skill additions, like Great Shield to Generals and Sure Shot to Snipers, but chances are they won't be all that useful or even noticable.
