as far as ive gone i can asume halo is a prison for the flood..but that about it i dont know how the hell the humans got there or why the covenant where shooting at them or for that matter why the covenant hate the humans..kinda lost in between the killing and the plot....

It never explains why the humans are at war with the Covenant. The Pillar of Autumn (The ship that the first level takes place in) is attacked and boarded by covenant soldiers, and they humans are forced to evacuate. They send off the escape pods to the closest thing to them - Halo. Later, when the flood, a race of parasites that infest and take over a living organism's body, is introduced, the Master Chief finds out that Halo is a "machine" that was created to kill the flood. A little hovering robot douschebag that sounds like C-3PO (The Monitor) teams up with you, along with the "sentinals", robots designed to destroy the flood. Later you realize that the only way to destroy the flood is by starving it to death, and that's exactly what Halo is made to do. Unfortunately, the flood's food source are all living organisms, meaning that Halo will destroy all life in the universe if used. Apparently, the Monitor doesn't give a shit about what happens to everyone in the universe, as long as the flood is destroyed. Then it's you versus the covenant, flood, and sentinals.

sentinals...are those the hovering laser using robots that apear in the backround when u meet the monitor?

well here the answer to all your questions. READ THE NOVELS! fall of reach goes in to the background of mc and the war and how they get to halo. the second novel is not necissary to read as its about the flood. the third is a prelude to halo 2.

The Covenant are attacking humans because the covenant leaders think that humanity is an affront to their gods and they attack the humans to try to wipe them out. ok have you got that now?
