What lots of people fail to recognize is that Game Freak does not just add Pokemon randomly without pattern. Every generation has a core theme that influences the additions of the Pokemon and the region that they inhabit. Generation I was genetic engineering, for example. It explains Pokemon in general, the wicked technology that we now know to be commonplace, certain locations like Silph Co and Pokemon Mansion, reviving of fossils, and even specific Pokemon like Voltorb, Porygon, Eevee, Ditto, and, of course, Mewtwo. Generation II was more focused on mythology, which gives us the Johto region's affinity for myths and tradition, and the generation's central plot revolving around legendary Pokemon. Generation III was based on ecology, which explains the wide array of biomes present in Hoenn and the rainbow of new Pokemon to inhabit them. The main legends of the game revolve around weather, and the Regis are the elements that make up habitats. Gen IV was "Ultimate". Diamonds are the ultimate hardest mineral, and a pearl is the ultimate spherical gem. Lots of old Pokemon were given new evolutionary forms... ultimate forms, I guess it could be said. The deities rule time, space, and antimatter - the very fabric of reality broken down into components. The plot was about the evil team of the day rewriting the universe. THEY INTRODUCED GOD. And let's not forget Cynthia, who is apparently an, if not the, ultimate trainer, judging from the fact that she has never missed a main series game since her debut. Black and White gave us opposing viewpoints - AKA, black and white morality. This one is pretty obvious throughout the games; I needn't explain this one. Our latest generation is a mystery so far. With X and Y, I assume it may return to genetic engineering (chromosomes?), or have something to do with space (X and Y coordinates?).

The point in that lengthy lecture is that Game Freak doesn't run out of ideas because Game Freak doesn't just pull ideas out of their asses and clump them by the hundreds and call them games. They put lots of thought into what they want to have added, and then they build off of that. So, to all of you who argue about why they made trash and ice cream into monsters, take into consideration the games that they were made for. It's based off of New York. There is trash and ice cream everygoddamnwhere in New York. Why would they NOT make them into monsters? And, to all of you who counter-argue by bringing up animated piles of toxic waste and half-painted spheres to prove that Game Freak always has its doozeys, you're also wrong - these Pokemon fit the theme of their game better than anything, just like trash and ice cream fits New York.

So, assume a hypothetical situation where Game Freak wanted to suddenly implement zombies. Tell me, what theme would THAT fit into? It wouldn't. It just wouldn't fit into anything. It's a terrible idea that completely kills the whole system that they have worked for years to build. It took them back-to-back 15-hour days over six years with the threat of multiple bankruptcies just to develop Red and Blue, a totally original concept. They earned their victory and reaped handsome rewards ever since. Turning from that to start going with the flow of today would only end them, since it takes away the only things that make them popular - utter cleverness and sheer uniqueness.

So, I say to you this: unless you want to be forever disappointed, give up on asking Pokemon to become more adult-oriented, and stop hating on it because you can't see all the work they put into it. It was built for kids and it will never grow up. Maybe you should just grow down and continue to enjoy it like everyone else.
