I juat kind of skimmed theough the article, but from what I saw, I was really surprised. Not necessarily by the boxart, but more from how many games were reased in 1998/1999 by Nintendo, especially 1999, compared to now where we get about one a year.

I just realized that I don't even have half the Pokemon games released. I am not a hardcore Pokefan.
As long as you have a measure of dedication that would cause you to do something a casual player would never do in the name of Pokemon, you can have the title of hardcore fan for all I'm concerned. I don't have a quarter of those games, yet I doubt anyone who isn't hardcore would buy all the OSTs to the main series like I did. :>
Perhaps it's just Nostalgia Goggles but am I the only one who finds most of the original Japanese covers to be... well... not appealing at all? ._.

Nope, I don't either. They all seem pretty boring in all honesty, and yeah, as you said, i'm pretty sure the only reason why people like thim these days is purely because of nostalgia. They never really did appeal to me.

My comment about the Nostalgia Goggles is referring to the idea that, maybe I only like the North American boxarts because I grew up with them? Would I think differently if I grew up in Japan and then looked at the international boxarts later? It's hard to give a fair judgement to something when it's competing with everything you used to know and love.
It would look bad on the NoA if their boxarts are worse off than the Japanese boxarts. I mean, they have more time to design them AND they know the bar has already been set with the Japanese releases. They just need to work to make them better (or just use the same one).
All the boxart looks great, but I also have to say I prefer the international versions. lol The Japanese R/B/G/Y seem a bit too text heavy imo, it takes the focus off of the pokemon on the cover.
