Well, to go with that, it doesn't really look that much like a dark-type. I'm sure on its own it could be, but as Seviper is just a poison-type, this one actually looks less like a dark-type than Seviper, because of its being purple instead of dark grey. Another thing that annoys me is that its shape is so different to Seviper's. Seviper has a very unique position, but this one's is very generic. Other than that, some of the shading is quite confusing, especially on its body, and the tail's shape at where it curves upwards also looks unnatural.

CJames21, in my years here, I think at least one contest has tried a New Year's theme every year, and generally speaking these theme don't get a lot of entries because it's pretty specific. A holiday like Christmas works better because there are so many symbols and songs and stories and whatnot to base an entry off of, but not so much for New Years. I would recommend changing it, unfortunately.

Keep it open to New Year's. There's more for it than you might think.

EDIT 2: Here's my entry:
It's based off of the New Year's Ball Drop, using Voltorb for the ball and Metagross's legs. Notice how I made the legs be a bit less curvy to more resemble the actual drop, and how the leg on the left is reshaded so it appears to curve slightly towards the ball. The colors for Voltorb and Metagross are switched in the sprite. Also note the red 10 I added at the bottom for realism.
