Spyro: 6 - Official details, title, and story here...

It is called...drumroll..."The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning"

~And here is the official rundown from Vivendi Universal Games (the publisher)~

"Level Up to Feel the True Power of the Purple Dragon! The Legend of Spyro shifts in game design and now focuses on action/combat and character growth/customization. Unleash devastating fury attacks, new melee and aerial combo attacks or use one of Spyro's many new breath abilities to defeat foes. Feel the power of the purple dragon as players have the control to upgrade Spyro's breath attacks and moves to their liking. It's a new beginning with a storyline that will serve as a prequel to all of the existing Spyro titles, the narrative will explore Spyro's origin for the 1st time and the game includes AAA voice talent from Elijah Wood, David Spade and Gary Oldman."

...no lie, sounds fake because of the high-class actors but nope, it is totally legit! I can't believe it either! What do you think it is about?

Here is the site:

http://www-vugames-com.staging.vugames.com/product.do?gamePlatformId=1903

Whilst the VUGames website only has a page for a PlayStation 2 version, according to the game's ESRB entry the game will appear on GameCube, PlayStation 2 and the Xbox. Incidently the game is rated 'Everyone 10+ (Cartoon Violence)'.

What could Spyro's parents have been doing all these years? We will most likely see the origins of Sparx. ... If we know his origins then we'll know so much about him we always wondered about!

I hope it is great, sounds cool I think!

What are your thoughts? I hope we get some screenshots at E3, right now there are none!

Here is the interview

The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning is a very literal title in that Krome Studios is both reintroducing Spyro with a story revolving around his origin as well as reestablishing what gamers have come to expect from the Spyro series. No longer is the game a simplistic platformer that had begun to lose its sense of originality and style; rather, Spyro's latest outing is darker, more action-packed, and most importantly, the most promising-looking title in the series in some time.

Now while the game is coming to the GBA and DS, only the PlayStation 2 version was shown to us, so we haven't yet had a chance to check out the portable versions. Assuming that these versions follow the same stylistic and gameplay direction however, much of this should apply to what we should be able to see at E3 next month.

The latest in the Spyro series returns to the little dragon's roots and explores his origins, why he's so special, why a firefly is constantly buzzing about him and more. In fact, the game actually opens with Spyro still a hatchling, only just then breaking out of his egg. We're told that at the start of the game, he doesn't realize he's a dragon and actually thinks he's a firefly. After he realizes what he is, he begins to learn and come to grips with his fire-breathing powers in what sounds like fumbling attempts at figuring out what does and doesn't work, something like the scene from the first Spider-man film.

More significant than the storyline however is the fact that Krome Studios has reinvented what a Spyro game could (and likely should) be, coming up with a very action-heavy title that focuses on combat much more so than platforming. Spyro has a wide variety of attacks that can be chained and strung together in a manner that's actually compared a bit to God of War. Granted, this is still a title aimed at kids so there's a whole lot about the game that is basically opposite of GoW, but the combat system does indeed seem to resemble said game in many ways.

Though the past games had Spyro mostly make use of a head-butt to fight off enemies, this time around he has combos that chain together moves with his tail, claws and more. Not only this, but he makes use of four different elemental attack types including Earth, Fire, Ice and Electricity. Each of these vary in the attack types and ranges, so while Earth is generally focused on close-ranged but heavy attacks, Electricity is good for distance attacks while Fire will cook someone at medium range. Some enemies will have natural resistances to these attacks, so a creature made of lava may be rather immune to a Fire-based attack but will take plenty of damage from an Ice-based attack.

Each of these elemental styles has different attack subsets, like breaths, melee and ranged fury attacks, making for what is actually 12 different elemental attacks in total. Each of these dozen types can be upgraded over the course of the game, and Krome Studios has made sure that every upgrade will provide a significant boost to that attribute (both visually and statistically) so that players will notice immediate feedback.

Not only is A New Beginning more action-oriented than previous titles in the series, but the game is a bit darker as well, both in terms of art design and theme. It's still a very bright and colorful game, but it's not quite as cheery as before.

The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning really does look like a nice, new direction for a series that was starting to feel fairly bland, to be honest. We'll have more on the game as we approach its October release.
