Neoseeker visits the LA Games Conference
|
On April 28, a couple of Neoseeker writers invaded Hollywood to attend the LA Games Conference 2009. It really wasn't what we expected, so rather than bringing you the usual report, we assessed the damage and whipped up an editorial for your reading pleasure. We hope it proves enlightening. Was a very good article, guys, I appreciate that you folks decided to go, even if it wasn't your cup of tea. I like business outside of gaming, so seeing this sort of thing pop up on Neoseeker was a bit of a rare treat for me.
To be honest, the last bit was not a surprise. There's been an increasing shift away from the sort of games which I've been playing for years, such as real time strategies, and into more of the first or third person shooters. If you check out a lot of sites as time went on, most folks can really notice the shift away from the old PC based RPGs and Strategies which I began on towards the more FPS based market which is much more popular with a wider, trigger-happy, Red Bull drinking younger group who own PS3s and 360s.
The age demographics isn't surprising either, and you really only have to look at gaming sites as a whole to see it. In the past few years since I've been here, there really has been a slow lowering of the age of the average member, and no, it's not because I've grown older -- there's fewer teenagers and adults and a lot more tweens on the site, and a lot of folks signing up these days are younger than some of the members from the '03-'05 range were when they were joining. The mature audience has become a little bit apathetic to the gaming world -- I was shocked when I found The Witcher forum to be dead, as well as other similar game forums.
I did like the information on both the topics and the rest which was tossed out, I found it to be a great read! Both of those things I mentioned above stood out to me because they are things that have bugged me for years now, and it was interesting to see gaming experts discuss them. The rest was a good read too, some stuff popped up, such as the stats, which I didn't know, and was happy to learn about it.
Wish I had been there, it sounds interesting to me, at least. =D Thanks a load for the article, guys, was a great read!

Sorry it took me a few days to read this, everything has been so hectic lately! I swear my life just gets busier and busier the older I get! LOL
Great article guys, I really found it fascinating. I'm not overly surprised at the industry moving their target from the hardcore gamers to the casuals. Like you mentioned as your article sub headline "Numbers don't lie". The casual gamers are making these companies rich, while the hardcore are a lot more picky about what games they play.
I wish you guys would have went the second day just to see what else they were going to touch on. However, I completely understand what you mean about feeling uncomfortable being out of your element.

quite an awful prognosis, yet an interesting point of view that you don't ever really hear/read about, like mentioned in the article. fortunately for me the ps2 has a hearty enough library to keep me occupied well into 2020.
