Info on Sheep Keeping
|
Hello, I'm not a member but someone who would like to have 2 or 3 sheep (as pets). We have an acre that our house is on. There is cattle fencing as there is a horse/cattle farm mainly surrounding us.
Would an acre (or most of one as we couldn't use the front area and of course our house is on the property)be enough for 2 or 3? Most of the property is at the sides of us and in the back. I assume the animals would get about 2/3 of the property. We also have 5 ducks within a yard of their own (fenced) on our place (200 ft. of fenced yard).
The "pasture" is wild and quite long with various grasses, weeds, etc. I have no idea what is growing. What about in the winter? How much hay would they need per day. What size of shelter would they need? What daily care is needed? Also very importantly, would predators still come if the sheep are brought into their shelter and closed up at evening time? Our ducks have a closed shed but of course they also have a 5 ft. high fence around them.
We can't afford to have the whole place re-fenced but I suppose it depends what type. We aren't fans of electric fencing but is that the only way to go? I heard that lightening can easily knock out the power and you have to pay to get a new power supply. In the meantime the animals could be vulnerable.
If anyone could answer my questions or especially add anything that would be great. We've never owned sheep but have always wanted a few.
Thanks, Paula ()

electrical fencing is usually disconnected from then power source when lightning is expected, and reconnected when all is clear, This means disconnecting the cable completelyfrom the outlet of the power unit
