The Process of Education (Read the rest of the thread before replying.)

§-

What do you think of the process of education as it is now?

Personally, I feel that to much time is spent learning unimportant things. For example, my school forces us to take a Fine Arts class, which I really do despise, and anyways I don't plan on becoming an artist. Also, shouldn't education be preparing us for our careers and life? Something like a Finance class of Economics at an early age really would do a lot to improve out society. The schools that i have gone to have squandered money away on idiotic required health / dieting classes; really, don't you think that time could be better applied as a Business Management class or a Politics class?

And shouldn't the people who fail school be kicked out? I mean, if someone fails a class and makes no effort to regain good grades, that person is assuredly not going to contribute to society. It really would save a lot of money and time if those people were just simply expelled; they obviously do not care about their well-being and education. it's a waste of money for us all, and morons like that tend to annoy me, anyways. And the same goes for mentally challenged children. Just let them die. We, in this world, cannot waste any more money educating these worthless brats. And I'm not talking about ADD or ADHD. Those things can be channeled by a person and used for their advantage. What I'm talking about are the more serious illness. Autism, for one. People with autism shouldn't even be educated, and if I was a parent of an autistic child, I would really be ashamed. We don't need to waste any more precious money educating people who won't learn.

When I say 'mentally challenged people', I mean mentally challenged people who, in school, do not show signs of intelligence, ability to successfully live in teh world, etc. I don't mean that as a blanket statement, as I realize that 'mentally challenged' represents quite a wide range of people.

I also accept that Physical Education classes are useful, in the fact that they expose one to new sports and also provide exercise for the average person. However, the Health classes that I have been witnessing are really focusing on unnecessary things like 'family relationships' and 'dieting strategies' when, really, the only useful thing should be taught in that class IMO is, uh, reproduction. And anyways, 90% of the class already knows enough to render the class void.

When I mean 'failing kids that don't show effort' are kids who don't know the curriculum, kids who don't want to know the curriculum, and kids who won't learn the curriculum. I realize that a failing grade does not symbolize a unintellectual mind. However, from the overall general quality of the student's work, one can usually easily conclude that the student is either smart or stupid, no matter what their grade is.

I agree. There are some people in my classes who just don't do a thing in class, and the teacher talking to them during class just wastes time.

I do think this is rather rant-ish.

No they shouldn't give up on the kids messing around. Everything else you said was fine though.

And for me it's the end of a quarter, so I get a grade report, which I'm really looking forward to. What are your grades?

You're a fat nerd, aren't you?

Sorry, there's my attempt at being funny. Anyways, I disagree with a lot of what you say. Why should mentally challenged people be dismissed from society? Believe it or not, they have coherent thoughts, just not at the same pace as the rest of us. My aunt, for example, is challenged and she's actually pretty smart. I also know some that can operate a computer a Helluva lot better than some Tech students. You're just seeing them as a hindrance, not as a real human, which they are.

As for failing kids, I know a few that just don't give the effort, but I guarantee will amount to more than most. I don't give much effort, but when it comes to crunch time, I usually know the subject better than the rest of the class.

On the topic of unecessary classes, I back you up about 90%. Health and Physical Education classes are needed, and if you want to skip them or have them banned, you're just a pansy. But I don't personally think I should be required to take Spanish 1 when I have no ambition to speak to Hispanics in their language. No offense to any Hispanics, but it's America and our dominant language is English. If I were to go to Mexico or Cuba or some place like that, however, I would expect myself to know Spanish. So if the class isn't important to your future, you shouldn't be forced to take it.

Right, so you mean the absolute bottom of the barrel kids? That's fine and dandy. Those assholes deserve to be kicked out. If they have no desire to be there, just get rid of them, like you said. My Health class is different from yours, though. We have 4 1/2 weeks of AIDS, STDs, drugs, and a few other things, then we changed it out to Physical Education. So if they talk about family issues, that's a little useless, like you said.

School standards are getting low, though. Why teach our kids to be mediocre?

re: The Process of Education (Read the rest of the thread before replying.)

It's high school, it's more a social experience than anything. High school builds character and knowledge where you manage to grasp it.

A lot of fluff was in my high school days and I'd like to think (I say like because someone has to pay for that shit to keep going) that whatever class you're going into has a small impact on your overall character and in some way you'll expand yourself. I was in all sorts of fine arts classes from art itself to woodworking, computers, ceramics, to auto body, and from my standpoint right now I'm glad I went through those classes so I at least have some knowledge in a different area of life. I understand that I may never again have the need to wedge an aerated piece of clay air tight again but at least I know what it is.

So what if there are kids who are there that don't want to be, there are people in life that don't want to be where they're at that you're going to deal with all the time, just learn to ignore it. If you're in high school now then you've a biased opinion on it since you're the one still being subjected to it, but myself and the people I know that went through it in one of the shittiest schools out there have their own brand of education from it and we're richer as a person having dealt with all the factors of that system.

As an end note, the schooling program is a government operated program, so of course it's doomed to fail or cause people a lot of stress.

Yeah, why not kill him? A lot of money is used to raise a child into an adult, and if they are not going to give it back.... [/scm]

I think that MAYBE school shouldn't be compulsary. I sure think that many subjects (like art) should be optional.

Man, at least you get a good education. I spend half my time in the office because I did something wrong. School's not relaxed anymore. In Elementary schools they explained to us about how in High School you'll have more freedom, now that I'm in High School, I don't see that freedom for shit. We can't wear what we want, and if we get a couple of tardies, we get sent to court and get a ticket. In fact, if we do anything wrong, we get a *bleep*ing ticket. Shit, my school is more worried about getting money our of our and our parent's pocket, just so they can have a succesful life. They give a shit about us. What's worse of all. We can't do anything about it. I ain't going to blame any student for wanting to start a new Columbine again.

re: The Process of Education (Read the rest of the thread before replying.)

What about the people who do wish to learn a new language, or about fine art? Are they expected to make a decision on whether it will be useful to their future at an early age? In that case, perhaps we could all go back to apprenticing and running family businesses.

There's also the fact that the curriculum is all the average child will grow up having learnt about in detail. Which means that it will be what the majority of the future adult population will consider important. I don't feel that cutting out all the skills that you feel are unnecessary is going to provide a balanced world in future, particularly art and such which is already neglected.

There's also the fact that school is about more than merely preparing you for a future job. It's about preparing you for life in general.

It is? What fantasy world are you living in?

The school system doesn't do a very good job of preparing you for much outside of class. A good number of teachers and schools are more focused on keeping up a high graduation rate, that courses are becoming easier and easier, allowing the less intelligent and less hard-working children to get a diploma, and set out into the world. Most have no clue as to what they are doing, and continue to be lost.

If you are talking about college, then yeah, they are better equipped to prepare teenagers for life because of the increased funds.
