	1984 was a look at a society placed in the 'futuristic' world set in the year 1984 where several warring continents were ruled strictly under government oppresion. If you've ever seen the movie Equlibrium it's something like that, though obviously came first. It's a classic look at civil injustice and government tyranny. I too would reccomend it highly. 	I saw Equilibrium, and just read a bit about an old movie that must be based off that book, sound about the same thing. I still don't see how that makes 1984 so special. 	Think of a world ruled like that, but drearier, and with no grammaton clerics. 	princess peach is totally right. 1984 was witten in 1948 (the last digits where changed around) it was an idea of what the future would be like. its a great book (and film) you should watch it... also you proberly guessed the tv show 'big brother' and 'room 101' comes from the book. its a classic book, thats why its so special -------------------

	In the book 1984, Big Brother and his minions (most of which you do not meet) were making the official language "NewSpeak", which was designed in such a way that if you spoke only NewSpeak, you could not communicate ideas such as freedom, rebellion, and the like.
