They did but it wasn't like he was only a member for a month and defected. He was active for a couple years and was conscripted on two separate occasions I believe. As far as the SS members go, I don't know a whole lot about it and I am sure he was a deserter at that point (though on the grounds that he didnt want to kill anyone not necessarily because he was a Jewish sympathizer and he also waited to desert til about a month before the war was over) but as far as I understand he and his father sheltered a couple officers for a short time and they were curious about him being of military age (pretty sure all able males were drafted at his age) but they must have been treated well because nothing came of it. Pretty sure that was just before the Americans put him in a PoW camp.

By 1936 it already became mandatory to be a member of the Hitler Youth and by 1943 it became a military reserve, so I really don't think you can hold that against him. That part with him joining the HJ in WWII is a bit misleading. -------------------

And Person_47 "Big Ratty" was conscripted into the Hitler youth in 1941. All boys aged 14 or over were required to do so. In 1943 he was draughted into the Flakhelfer (AA core) aged 16. Many sources often called him an AA gunner but more likely he was an ammo bearer or loader due to his age. He later fucntioned in a communications role relaying targetting information between the battery commander and high command. He was later draughted into an infantry regiment in 1944 and deserted some time in April. As did half of the German army. I remember a while ago one of his colleauges (forgive me for forgetting who) commented that he was actually an assistant in the Luftwaffe. Which was shown to be false. I dont know wither that was a mistake or a delliberate attempt to try to distance him from a direct association with the word "Hitler". As far as records and his own biography shows he served in the Hitler Youth, Flakhelfer and Wermacht (Heer). SkX IMO you are quite right. He was not involved by choice and in fact showed several signs that he was against the Nazi regime. However... Its really funny. Edit: Feb 14, 13 3:13am
