I don't know, maybe I'm letting my opinion get too much in the way. But I've played alot of shooters and re4's pick and pop, body part based shooting system is great and way better than most shooters before it could do. Still incredibly fun to play, in a vacuum.
I think we both/all are. Hey, we are gamers, we love games. We cant help letting some emotion creep in. Upon re-reading other topics i realised many of my own comments are ambiguously subjective/objective.
I think i also get far too hung up on it. From now on i'll just try to assume everyone is talking subjectively. Makes life easier.
quoteLike what? I'm up for a discussion.
First of let me re-adjust what i said earlier. Code Veronica was actually the game which first put me off the franchise. RE4 is what nailed the coffin. Just had to say that.
And mneh... I'm hesitant. I actually left a previous forum over an RE4 discussion LOL. Ah here goes, why not. I'll just list things point by point as inoffensively as i can. First of all the stuff i did like:
- The guns. Awesome. Mauser Red 9? 12guage? Brilliant. Infact the entire weapons and shooting system was great.
- That "pick and pop" style play you mentioned was excellent fun.
- Over shoulder view worked well for combat purposes. I'll come back to this.
- That big Rasputin Monk looking motherfu**er was well good. Loved the part where you battled him after his spine extended and his "rib fingers" as my brother called them popped out. Good ol' classic resident evil that.
- Those large insect type enemies were excellent. Really threatening looking and reminded me of "The Fly" movie. Kinda creepy.
- Chainsaw blokes. OK so bad movie cliche' and were shoehorned in with little explenation but hey, guy chasing you with a chainsaw? Pretty cool anyway.
The bad stuff in as chronological an order as i can remember, oh, and all in my very subjective and personal opinion LOL:
- Presidents daughter story line. I just dont f***ing care. Wanted her dead immediately. Destroyed any interest i had in the story pretty much from the get go. Spent many a game reload shooting her on purpose. Not only was it a terrible storyline, it made no sense, was completely illogical and I immediatelty hated her weak "damsel in destress" kind of character.
- Who are all these poor Spanish people? Have they been attacked by zombies? Have i tor escue them? Wait... they ARE the zombies? OK. Most unthreatening enemies in a horror game for me. Almost felt bad killing the dirty peasants. I spent that entire game waiting for zombies...
- Rural spain... OK. Why? You know what? Dont care why.
- Fish monster. Its... just a big fish. And Leon suddenly adopts the spirit of Captain Ahab to kill it. Mneh... I found it stupid. If you had stopped me whilst firing my 12" Magnum at the final form Birkin in Resident evil 2 and told me that i'd soon be throwing harpoons at a big fish, i'd have slapped you.
- That little Napoleon Bonapart looking guy. WHY?! Just why?! Terrible character. Felt like an easter egg kinda joke almost. He was bordeline cute and lovable. And what did he turn into? A giant disguisting blob of tenticles, a 7ft monster with claws who's on fire? No. A giant... flower? How... sweet.
- "Hammer Horror" Cliche castle. Just reminded me of dysneys "Mickey Mouse and the castle of illusion" on sega megadrive. Felt like an old dusty throwback to the days when horror movies were not scary. I wanted labs, cities, industrial locations, apocalyptic scenes of mass devestation. Not a "spooky" Scooby doo castle in a picturesque spanish forest. Utterly destroyed any tension for me. So dissapointed that capcom went there.
- Suits of armour attacking you. So, so aweful. I dont even want to comment any more. I'll just rant and swear and punch my monitor.
- Krauser fight. No. Just no. Ever. In any game please. QTE's in general were reason enough for me never to have replayed the game after completion. Maybe they have a place in some games. But not resident evil.
- Aww how could i forget. The "Merchant". Some random east londoner who just conveniantly manages to traverse the disease and zombie infested lands without any trouble. Shite character. Really annoyed me. Totally out of place. Felt like a character from "Monkey Island" or something. What... the... f**k.
I have other less specific, sort of more general problems with it too:
- Not scary. In its entirety. At all. Again just personally i am stunned that adult human beings found ANY of this game scary. Hey maybe if you have a pre-existing fear of dogs then OK. Or you are allergic to peasants and poor people then its understandable. I cant even think of what bit COULD HAVE BEEN scary. Even the sound and music were more action oriented. And some of it (Massive fish, napoleon bonapart, suits of armour) was borderline funny. Or would have been if i hadnt been crying with dissapointment.
- Quick time events. I hate them, some like them. But they utterly destroyed the pacing of the game for me. Just felt like running into a brick wall every once in a while. Horrific idea. Absolutely horrific. Reduced me to a swearing screaming mess. One of the primary reasons i never replayed the game.
- Overall story. For me previous games have had a great story implimented in a rather corny and cheesy way. I can see past that. But IMO this was a *bleep*ing aweful story presented terribly. Krauser bloke shoehroned in, Presidents daughter who i'd have just shot, bizarre fantasy characters and settings. Virus replaced with "Las Plagas" How conveniant. Bleurgh. No interest what so ever.
- Over shoulder view. OK it worked. And it worked well for shooting purposes. but it wasnt scary. it made me feel too in control, too reponsive and too much like a standard shooter. The old camera angles were used specifically to create tension. Remember seeing that leg sticking out, or catching a glimpse by a window? I'd have had the entire game shot from external RE1 style views which then switch to a shoulder view at the press of a button. Or made far more use of external cameras during non combat areas. There was also something very artistic about previous games. The static rendered backgrounds were awesome and the camera angles enhanced this. Foggy forest gets f***ing old, f***ing fast.
I'll end here because im pissing myself off even thinking about some of this LOL. Please people, dont retort being all pissy at me. Im just being honest. I have had enough bad experiences "discussing" this game.
But y'know what
demonfurby, I feel like i have just spoken to a psychiatrist. Phew... i had to get some of that stuff out.
