Ey i have no clue what he is on about. I started a normal friendly thread. Everyone else seems to be fine.

My favourites were, LMA 2003 and 2005, GTA III and Vice City, Gran Turismo 4...

They're the only games that stick out for me, from the PS2 era anyway. If it had to be a game on PS3, i'd say Red Dead Redemption, Gran Turismo 5 or Battlefield 3. Them 3 are the only games i've continued to play and enjoy after completing them, especially GT5 and BF3

XCOM: Enemy Unknown? Half-Life 2 (which deservedly won)? The often-unknown brilliance that was Eternal Darkness? Starcraft 2? Journey or Heavy Rain (for their unique experiences)? Oblivion or Skyrim? Dragon Age: Origins?

RE5 ruined the franchise. 4 was a revolution. It's Capcom's fault the series turned to shit by getting complacent and liking the taste of money.

That's like saying Half Life ruined the first person shooting genre because it was the first great shooter to use realism and an emphasis on narrative.

We'll all have differing opinions on that. No-ones gonna be universally right surely?

Looking at it as objectively as possible, it's hard to say it ruined the franchise. Survival horror was dying and RE's way of going about its horror was awful. 3rd person fixed cameras with a bunch of weapons didn't really strike too much fear into people (This is coming from a huge resident evil fan). So they had to change how they were doing it, and in the process revolutionized shooting and horror games in the process. It influenced how many 3rd person shooting franchises after, and polarized horror itself. Now survival horror is either super shooty, "BLARGH, I scared you" stuff with atmosphere which spread itself into the mainstream, or super niche, "We're going to make a horror game by horror fans for horror fans" with oozing amounts of quality because the devs really care about what their doing. If anything it improved both the franchise and indirectly survival horror itself. I mean, before RE4 horror was dead in the gaming industry. Without it we'd never get the high quality real horror that is usually produced independently today.

Not only that, say what you will about the awful story (but then again, no RE game ever has had a good story), dialogue, acting and all that, it was a superb shooter with great mechanics, good atmosphere, weaponry, bosses and all that jazz. Plus all the influence. I really don't see a problem with someone calling it a game of the decade. Ruining the franchise? If you love the original re's and can't take anything different, yeah. Bad game? Not at all

I dont get why thats analogous. No-one gave a reason or a "because" did they?

The only complaint I ever hear when people say RE4 ruined it is because it took itself in a new direction with the emphasis on shooting. I don't know what anyone else could point to when they say it ruined the franchise.

Mneh i think we'r getting lost in objectivity Vs Subjectivity here LOL. I allow people any opinion on the game. As long as its presented as opinion. Then again i may have made a mistake in taking Aulis Vaara comment as pure opinion.

I mean many of the things you took as objective fact, i actually completely disagree with. (Though much of it is quite right IMO. It was certainly a succesful game and did influence many great shooters no doubt).

Dayum. I could write a 3 page rant on why i hated that game. (Subjectively ofcourse). Everything from setting and theme, to the new direction you mentioned, to the story, to some of the specific mechanics and stuff. Like i said. Its REALLY subjective. I could only list MY personal issues.

Lack of ammo and de emphasis on combat is important for atmosphere, in addition to good level and area design. RE's original camera only obstructs what you're seeing. It's more of a gimmick than anything. It didn't have much at all to do with the atmosphere. If they had kept their original demos of re4 nobody would be complaining that it's over the shoulder. They just emphasized the combat part and made ammo abundant. I mean, just look at the best horror games ever, they're all pretty much first person. They have no problem with atmosphere.

But to dismiss a game because it's something different, and arguably better? Definitely more popular and influential with imo better mechanics for what it's trying to do (shooting vs scaring). I don't see why she can't call it the best game of the decade.

Well, "bad" is a relative word. If you've only ever played a few games (including re4), and liked all of them but re4, then yeah, you're going to think it's bad. But if you take everything together and weigh it out, re4's gameplay itself isn't bad. Practically everything narrative-wise is awful, but the mechanics themselves are really good, especially if you compare it to really bad games

I don't know, maybe I'm letting my opinion get too much in the way. But I've played alot of shooters and re4's pick and pop, body part based shooting system is great and way better than most shooters before it could do. Still incredibly fun to play, in a vacuum.
