Yeah, its moved pretty far away from how the series started for older fans. I was a Resident Evil mega fanboy. I still think Resident Evil 2 is possibly the greatest game ever made HAHA.

Its barely recognisable now. I kinda gave up after playing Resident Evil 4 personally and couldnt get through one minute of the RE6 demo.

I think its pretty much a whole new generation of fans these days.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2

Only bought this for zombies mode but both the campaign and multiplayer modes surprised me with how fun they were. Still wouldn't have bought the game if zombies wasn't in it, but the awesomeness of zombies added with the fun from the other two modes pushed this just above RE6 for me. And i haven't bought many games this year, although when i play AC3 that might win.

I havent played Far Cry 3 yet so im going with Assassins Creed III

In my humble opinion neither Black Ops 2 nor Assassin's Creed 3 should really be up there. AC3 is a brilliant addition to the franchise and from what I've seen BO2 looks like the best COD in ages, but neither of them really pushed the boundaries of gaming that much.
Although there is no "right answer" I believe GOTY should be given to a game that changed or at least tried to change the medium.

Spec-Ops: The Line really deserves a mention for being such a different and ambitious FPS (especially in this day and age where generic shooters are a dime a dozen). Despite all its faults it tried to give gamers a different perspective of a genre they were so familiar with (or so they thought), which cannot be commended enough.

Glad Max Payne 3 got a vote but I really wish it got more credit for being a nigh perfect shooter. Achieving the perfect balance of combat and set-pieces, Rockstar have shown the world how cover-based shooting should be done, and the bullet-time mechanic is a dream-come-true for a gamer. The plot is decent and Max Payne himself shines through as the hardened, gritty protagonist who develops beautifully throughout the game. Rockstar deliver what they always have- fun- through numerous exhilarating levels and the best combat system I've seen since inFamous 2.

Hitman: Absolution is phenomenal. Not much else to say here really, this is gaming done right. (Also this is how a classic franchise should be brought to the next generation, cough Duke Nukem cough)

I'm happy to see The Walking Dead up there as it did so many things right; a truly dedicated decision-making system is something that is frequently attempted but rarely successful and this game absolutely nailed it, where your decisions can affect who lives and who dies and carry over multiple games. This only works, however, if you have real characters and not the cardboard cut-outs that are so prevalent in zombie horror. The Walking Dead succeeds spectacularly here as well, as all the characters are multi-dimensional and have deep, meaningful relationships with the player that alter as the game progresses, depending on how the player behaves towards them. Worthy of mention here is Clementine who is how the token "vulnerable child" should be done but never is. As close to a AAA point-and0click as the industry may ever see, The Walking Dead immerses the player completely with a riveting narrative and unique gameplay.

Borderlands 2 looks pretty entertaining. It's certainly unique, with zany characters, mad weapons and crackling dialogue. GOTY could do worse, at least it doesn't release a new installment every year.

However, it is nothing short of an outrage that one game (which a good friend of mine referred to as "Not just GOTY but Game of the Generation") has not received a single vote here. While it is short and extremely indie, this game is one of the few that has actually changed people's lives and with just 2 hours of gameplay has provided a more powerful gaming experience then could ever be imagined. Hopefully anyone actually reading this knows by now that I'm speaking of Journey. This accurately named masterpiece is more of a voyage bordering religious than a mere video game. It simply cannot be compared to any other game known to your (overly-dedicated) writer; Journey is the most pure, wondrous adventure full of majesty and beauty; everything our beloved medium should be and more. Such a game does not come along very often so rather than lauding it too much I advise anyone with a PS3 to get this game and enjoy one of the most magical experiences of your life.


But since this is just a popularity contest I vote for Assassin's Creed 3, lol. Apologies for the rant/theses-esque post.
